Establishment
This award was made possible by the generosity of Gale Clithero, in loving memory of his wife, Susan Hawkins, a William Woods University alumna and educator, for the purpose of helping further the education of a WWU student in need.
Susan Hawkins is a 1970 graduate from Staunton High School in Staunton, Illinois. She enrolled at William Woods in the fall of that year, completing her freshman and sophomore years before transferring to the University of Missouri in Columbia. She received her BA and MA in speech therapy from MU.
While Susan began her professional career working as a speech therapist, the bulk of her career was spent as a consultant on autism at Project ACCESS (State Department of Education grant program) at Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. Susan worked at Project ACCESS for 25+ years where she served as consultant, presenter, librarian, and director. Susan was very passionate about her work with special needs children; she was also known as an excellent presenter!
Susan looked fondly on her time at William Woods; she loved the small classes and the relationships she made there. She was a consistent donor and supporter over the years.
The award is available to existing WWU students who have demonstrated financial need.
