William Woods Giving Day

William Woods Giving Day, November 29, 2022

Giving Tuesday is Tuesday, November 29, 2022. It is always the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday when like-minded people work together for the institutions we love to support a meaningful and positive cause. It is a day to take a momentary break from the commercialism of the season and remember the true meaning - charity and care for one another.

At William Woods University, this is the basis on which we were founded.

Begun in 1870 as the Female Orphans School, we cared for children orphaned by the Civil War. Finances were always a concern and in 1900, on the verge of closure, a Missouri physician and business man, William Stone Woods, along with his wife, wrote a personal check for $30,000 which saved the school from closing.

In gratitude, the trustees renamed the school in his honor and William Woods College, now University, was born.

It is in memory of this foundation of true charity that we dedicate this Giving Tuesday in honor of Dr. William Stone Woods. We launch 1870 minutes (approximately 30 hours) and we have set an aggressive goal of $30,000 to honor that first gift by Dr. Woods over 120 years ago. We know it will be a challenge to reach in just 30 hours, but we are confident on the goodwill of our alumni and friends community.

Dr. Woods was quoted as saying that writing that check did him more good than the school. Let us join together today to celebrate the spirit of Dr. William S. Woods and remember the positive effect that giving, volunteering and kindness has not only on the recipient, but on the donor as well.

We invite all alumni, supporters and friends to give on Giving Tuesday, to spread the word, and to honor the legacy of William Woods.
