Dr. Laura Free will present this year’s keynote address, "Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Racist?" Dr. Free is a historian at Hobarth and Smith Colleges and the author of Suffrage Reconstructed: Gender, Race and Voting Rights in the Civil War Era. Dr. Free will be discussing the ways that racism was adopted as a rhetorical tool in the 1860s, and the implications it had for the suffrage movement into the 20th century and for feminism beyond that.
Dr. Free’s address is sponsored in part by the Missouri Humanities Council and with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
