Interpreter Mentorship & Advancement Program (IMAP)

Program Overview

IMAPThe Interpreter Mentoring and Advancement Program (IMAP) at William Woods University is a structured, six-month mentoring experience designed to support recent graduates of ASL-English Interpreting programs as they enter the field. IMAP provides a bridge between academic learning and professional interpreting practice through one-on-one mentoring, skills development, and guided reflection. The program accepts new cohorts twice a year, in January and July. Each mentee is paired with an experienced Interpreter Mentor for six months, during which time they will engage in weekly meetings, complete guided practice assignments, and attend professional development opportunities. Mentees may reapply after their initial term for an additional six-month cycle if they wish to continue.

 Program Objectives:

  • Support Recent Graduates – Provide structured, weekly mentoring sessions to help recent graduates transition from student to professional interpreter.

  • Enhance Skill Development – Offer targeted feedback and skill-building opportunities to improve accuracy, fluency, and decision-making in real-world interpreting settings.

  • Increase Certification Readiness – Equip participants with the knowledge, strategies, and confidence needed to achieve national certification.

  • Foster Professional Growth – Cultivate a community of practice where emerging interpreters can engage in reflective learning, networking, and professional development.

  • Engage the Broader Interpreting Community – Host workshops that offer ongoing education to working interpreters while generating revenue to sustain and expand the program.

  • Address the Interpreter Shortage – Contribute to the field by preparing highly skilled, competent interpreters who can meet the growing demand for ASL-English interpreting services.

"The knowledge, experience, and care from the professors at William Woods ASL Interpreting program, as well as from the on-site Deaf lab mentors, gave me many opportunities to learn new vocabulary and skills as I worked toward my degree. The observation and hands-on interpreting work that was available through my senior year internship helped to hone my skills in a safe environment and make me a competent interpreter, ready to address the needs of our Deaf community. The William Woods ASL Interpreting program is unique, in that it invites the surrounding Deaf community to be a part of our learning process by hosting local events for students and Deaf people to gather, socialize, and learn from each other."
