Historically, the African-American churches were an important influence in the cause of the Civil Rights Movement. Many of the major activists were ministers. Many of the images that inspired their vision came from the Bible. Ministers like Martin Luther King and Billy Kyles and Joseph Lowery and Ralph Abernathy found strength in the tradition of the Hebrew prophets and it fueled their commitment to building a new world of justice and peace and freedom.
