Getting Started: Connecting to the Internet from the Residence Halls

Every student who lives in the resident halls at William Woods University is provided with an in-room high speed Internet connection. There are three components you need in order to take advantage of this service which is provided and maintained by University Information Technologies. This introductory guide explains what you need to know and how to get started with connecting to the Internet from the Residents Halls.

What You Will Need

Network Card:

Most new computers come with Ethernet Network cards since it became a standard feature. These cards can be purchased for desktop computers through the Helpdesk. Network cards can also be purchased at your local computer or office supply store. Unfortunately we are unable to sell laptop network cards.

Network Cable:

Along with a network card, you will need an Ethernet network cable. These can be purchased through the UIT Helpdesk, or they can also be found at your local computer or office supply store

Computer:

One of the most important components is obviously a computer. Many students who bring laptops enjoy having the ability to be mobile while regular desktops can be more cost effective and easier to repair. It is always best to ensure that you have an extended warranty on whatever computer you bring to campus.

How To Connect
jack

Data Connection:

Each room within the residents halls has a data jack that is labeled "A" and "B". These two data ports allow roommates to each have a computer connected at the same time. All of the "A" ports should be active. If you have a roommate that has a computer and one port works and the other doesn't, you can contact the Helpdesk to schedule a time to have it activated. A request for activation can take 24-48 hours depending on call volume. If you do not have lights (noted below) you may try the other port. This will tell you if you are getting an active connection.

Network Card Lights:

If your connection is active you should see one solid light and one blinking.
