What is a Family group mentor?

  • What is PeaceJam?

PeaceJam is an international educational program that works with Nobel Peace Laureates to inspire individuals to create service-learning projects that generate change in both the participants and their surrounding communities.

One component of the PeaceJam program is an annual PeaceJam Youth Conference which focuses on bringing people ages 14-19 face to face with a Nobel Peace Prize Winner.  This two-day conference inspires youth to engage in positive change in their community.

Another important component of the program is the PeaceJam SLAM. This is a mini version of the conference that is inspirational and fun for all who get involved. Nobel Peace Laureates are not involved with SLAMs.

  • Who is this year's Nobel Peace Laureate?

Betty Williams of Northern Ireland

  • Why get involved?

PeaceJam offers an amazing and potentially life-changing opportunity for young people to empower themselves by teaching them to understand the root causes of violence and providing them with inspirational stories of Nobel Laureates who have. It is also a great resumé builder! peacejammers

  • How can I be involved?

The PeaceJam Heartland region is looking for college students to act as mentors to participating students.  Mentors will act as facilitators of discussion as well as positive and energetic role models for participants. Volunteers are also needed for activities.

  • What will I do as a Mentor?

As a "Family Group Mentor", you will work with another family group mentor (aka: college student) to lead the 10-13 youth participants (aka: highschoolers) who are in your "family group". At SLAMs and Conferences, you will do things like facilitating team building exercises, talking about real-life issues, & getting to know each other in a fun, high-energy, and yet relaxed atmosphere. You also get to attend engaging workshops and inspirational sessions, participate in a service-learning project, enjoy a cultural exposition (like listening to AMAZING drummers or salsa-dancing), cheer your students on as they present their projects to the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, AND get your picture taken with that said person (aka: the Nobel Peace PrizeLaureate)!
