Money for the scholarship came from A.G Edwards, which provided $20,000 to Missouri Colleges Fund to fund 16 scholarships of $1,250 each at MCF-member independent colleges and universities. The funds were restricted to students enrolled in a business, accounting or economic field of study.
A 2001 graduate of Lawrence Free State High School, Swenson attended Coffeyville Community College and Northern Oklahoma College on baseball scholarships. After earning an associate of science degree, he accepted a baseball scholarship at William Woods University.

In addition to playing baseball, his activities at WWU include: secretary of Phi Beta Lambda business fraternity, senior class representative for the Student Alumni Council, community advisor and member of the bi-annual drug and alcohol review board.
