Terry Martin, professor of art at William Woods University, will show some of his recent artwork and discuss “Faith Expressed through Abstract Painting” during a gallery talk that is free and open to the public.

The event is planned for 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, at the Gladys Woods Kemper Center for the Arts third floor corridor gallery.

Martin believes that “somewhere between the structures of religion and science, is a spiritual realm of creativity and imagination called art.”

He notes that since the beginning of civilization, art has played an important role, but it was not until modern times that personal expression was common practice among artists.

Martin says that sometimes the process of painting is, for him, like a sustained prayer.

“When I began to consider the possibility of painting and prayer, I tended to paint less specific images. I began to embrace the symbolic qualities of color, shape, texture and contract. I have faith that interesting images will appear.”
