Kiersten Lockman, a William Woods University sophomore from Kannapolis, N.C., joined Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.) because she wanted to be part of an organization that helps students build relationships with alumni.
She isn’t the only one. To date, 134 students have joined the new organization. Membership is now closed until new students arrive in January.
The idea, according to Becky Stinson, alumni activities director, is “to enhance the student experience by strengthening traditions and building loyalty to The Woods.”
The membership fee is $10, with $5 going to the Loyalty Fund and $5 in support of the S.T.A.T. organization and its programming. Upon joining, new members receive a S.T.A.T. “swag bag” with an official S.T.A.T. t-shirt, local coupons, and other fun swag.
In addition, students are eligible for special prizes throughout the semester for wearing their membership shirts on S.T.A.T Spirit Days.
Instead of attending meetings, S.T.A.T. members are offered several opportunities year-round, including networking with alumni speakers, meeting alumni board members, and invitations to special events.
“Networking with WWU alumni and friends allows students to see first-hand how important it is to give back after graduation,” Kacie Dielschneider, Loyalty Fund coordinator, said.
The best part of S.T.A.T. for Ben Struemph, a junior from Jefferson City, Mo., is the ability to meet with alumni who care about the success of students.
“I recently had the opportunity to attend a dessert reception with the alumni board. We gained valuable knowledge about different things to help us in our lives as students and then into our time as alumni,” Struemph said.
Stinson explained, “a member may choose to network with alumni, dine with a visiting speaker, relax with a Starbuck’s finals break, and can rely on guaranteed seating at presentations and events.”
