WWU fraternity sponsors golf tournament to benefit Scleroderma Foundation

Lyndsey Ellis was a freshman and a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority at William Woods University when she died from complications of scleroderma at the start of school in 2010.

This year, as they did last year, members of her brother's fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, will honor her memory by donating half the proceeds from their golf tournament to the National Scleroderma Foundation.

Pi Kappa Alpha's sixth-annual golf tournament will be held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 27 at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton.

"This is such a great event and I am glad that we, as Pikes, are able to represent such a great foundation. We strive to put on the best tournament that we can in order to donate the funds to the Scleroderma Foundation," Ryan Ellis, Lyndsey's brother, said.

"My family and I are so grateful that Lyndsey's memory will continue to live on through Pi Kappa Alpha and their contributions to the Scleroderma Foundation."

Participants in the tournament include William Woods returning alumni, faculty and members of the Pi Kappa Alpha  (Pike) chapter. The event will also be open to the campus and local communities.

Registration is $300 per team of four. Registration will be taken up until the day of the event. The Pikes predict participation from 18-20 teams.

"We've been so lucky to have so many businesses from the community donating items for the tournament. They make it possible for us to do this every year," said Joe Parenteau, Pike treasurer.

Some businesses from the local community that have donated items for prizes are Tanglewood Golf Course, Callaway Bank and Beks. Each hole will be sponsored and have the opportunity for a mulligan, or the opportunity to buy another shot.

Generally classified as an autoimmune rheumatic disease, scleroderma or systemic sclerosis is a chronic connective tissue disease. The Scleroderma Foundation is a national organization designed for people with scleroderma along with their families and friends.

"We hope that a lot of people will come out and help us raise money for the Scleroderma Foundation. We appreciate any support that we can get from the community," Parenteau said.
