Brian Dougherty of St. Peters, Mo., was the recipient of a $1,500 Monsanto Outstanding Science or Mathematics Teacher Scholarship Award from Missouri Colleges Fund (MCF) during his senior year at William Woods University. He recently graduated with a degree in secondary and middle school mathematics.

While always achieving well in math, he never imagined he would one day pursue a career in teaching the subject. While attending a community college, Dougherty changed his major from business administration to education.

“Helping other students with math problems would always make me happy,” said Dougherty. “Education is a very rewarding career, and I feel that the rewards of having students succeed are good enough for me.”

While at William Woods, Dougherty participated in a variety of activities, including EDU Owls, Campus Activities Board, Multicultural Affairs Club, Kindness Connection, men’s soccer, Knowing the Woods and Kappa Delta Pi.

Dougherty intends to pursue a master’s degree in educational administration, but says that while he may obtain his principal’s certification, he believes his passion will remain in the classroom. He also plans to maintain his involvement in soccer and feels that math and soccer are the perfect combination for him.
