Greeks at William Woods University are testing out their barber skills, and they invite the campus community and the public to watch.

Alpha Chi Omega is holding its fourth annual “Hair Cuts for CARDV” fundraising event at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at Junior Lake.

For a monetary or item donation to The Coalition Against Rape and Domestic Violence (CARDV), anyone can sponsor a person or volunteer to get a haircut, courtesy of the sorority members.

CARDV is a nonprofit organization that provides services and support to individuals affected by sexual and domestic violence. It also provides education and leadership within the Callaway County community to help change the societal conditions that cultivate domestic violence.

Alpha Chi Omega is now accepting donations from CARDV’s ‘wish list’ of needed items, which includes things like shampoo, toothpaste, soap, toys or art supplies for child therapy, clothing and winter coats.

In conjunction with their Founder’s Day, Alpha Chi Omega will also be selling plates of food and cake to raise additional money for CARDV.

“Supporting groups such as CARDV teaches members of Alpha Chi Omega the importance of ‘paying it forward’ and giving back to your community,” explains Liza Payne, chapter president, “Unlike a medical disease, this is a cause that we have the power to stop.”

Throughout the year, Alpha Chi Omega members raise money to help those affected by domestic violence. They do this through various events, such as Lyre Fest, which includes the selling of t-shirts, as well as an entry fee. Members also conduct a clothing drive and collect women's toiletries for CARDV.

They also try to raise awareness of the domestic violence problem by sponsoring a remembrance luminary ceremony, the Clothesline project, Make Your Mark, sponsoring educational programs on campus, and hosting guest speakers from CARDV.

In years past, Alpha Chi Omega has teamed with Phi Gamma Delta fraternity for “Haircuts for CARDV.” This year, both fraternities from William Woods and the fraternities at Westminster College have been invited to help the cause.
