With Halloween approaching, teams of William Woods University students hope to “Scare Away Cancer” with a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Students will gather in Tucker Dining Hall Oct. 20 for this year’s Up ’til Dawn finale event. A haunted house, hay stacks, picture booth, haunted movie theater and pumpkin carving will add to the atmosphere. Participants are being encouraged to wear Halloween costumes to go along with the theme.
This is the seventh year WWU students have conducted fundraising events to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which treats children who have cancer. Up ’til Dawn has raised approximately $73,000 since the group was started on campus in 2004.
To participate in the finale, students must get together in teams of up to five people, fill out a sign-up form, collect $5 from each team member, and turn both the forms and the money in by Oct. 15. Forms can be obtained from any of the Up ‘til Dawn executive board members, or teams can register online at www.myuptildawn.org.
Each team member is asked to bring 50 addresses to the event, where they will address and stuff envelopes with the Up ‘til Dawn letters. Up ’til Dawn Executive Director Brianna Barnard is excited to have some special guests attending the finale event.
“A patient’s family is also a part of the finale's festivities,” said Barnard. “A child associated with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and their family will come to William Woods and share their story. It is a very special treat for all who join us, and we look forward to it every year.”
