A current William Woods University art student and an alumnus took their talents to the Jefferson City sidewalks recently, winning prizes for their chalk drawings.
They participated in the chalk painting competition part of the Capital Jazzfest and Street Art Fair Sept. 17 in Memorial Park.
Ashleigh Talbert, a freshman art major from Jefferson City, won first place in the college division for her drawing of Miles Davis. Adam Dresden, a 2009 art education graduate from Granite City, Ill.
received second place. Dresden attends graduate school at Southern Illinois University.
The chalk drawings were done directly on the pavement - just like graffiti, and each artist was given a 4 x 6-foot area on which to draw. The results were judged on aesthetics, execution, creativity and complexity.
The Capital Jazzfest and Street Art Fair is sponsored by Capital Arts and includes two days of art and music, with the chalk painting competitions on the first day.
Capital Arts started more than 40 years ago with the formation of Capital City Council on the Arts. Today, the organization not only offers spectacular gallery space for the visual arts, but promotes all the arts through sponsorships and inclusion in its arts calendar. Its community outreach programs are numerous, and expanding. Capital Arts continues to advocate for the cultural enrichment of all residents of Jefferson City through a diversity of offerings.
