The Coalition Against Rape and Domestic Violence (CARDV) is offering the community the opportunity to get a jump on holiday shopping and support the organization, while learning more about its services.
CARDV will show a powerful documentary, called “I Am a Survivor of Rape,” at William Woods University at 5 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 11) in the Ivy Room on the lower level of Tucker Dining Hall. The film was produced by a University of Missouri graduate student, Colleen McDevitt.
In addition to the documentary, there will be a short presentation on CARDV services, discussion of the documentary and a fundraiser. Skin care and wellness products from Arbonne International Holiday Gifts and purses from Carolyn’s Fab Bags will be offered for sale, with 25 percent of all sales benefiting CARDV. The sale will take place from 4 to 8 p.m.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by Alpha Chi Omega sorority and Loree Monroe, WWU’s nurse practitioner.
“CARDV offers a wide variety of services to assist victims of domestic violence and sexual assault,” said Carolyn Garner, volunteer coordinator and victim advocate with CARDV.
“We have a 24-hour crisis hotline and advocacy services to meet with the victims and help them with safety planning and negotiating the court system. We also refer clients to other social services in the area if they need help with utilities, rent assistance, housing, clothing food or other basic services.”
CARDV services also include emergency temporary shelter, crisis intervention, health and wellness support and legal assistance. The organization was created in 1994. Last year, it provided services to 633 individuals and received 2,012 calls on its crisis line.
