Theatre Department at WWU Gives End-of-Year Awards

The William Woods University theatre department recently held its annual Achievement Night, awarding students for their academic and production achievements for the 2008-09 theatre season.
Cody Olendorff, a senior from Pacific, Mo., won the “Most Contribution to the Theatre Department” Award. This award is the highest honor the department gives to any actor, student, technician, designer or manager. The recipient is the person that best exemplifies all aspects of the theatre department.
In addition, Olendorff won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in “Hedda Gabler.” The award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role went to Taryn Watts of Nixa, Mo., also for “Hedda Gabler.”
New this year were awards for Best Actor and Actress in a Supporting Role. These awards were won by Bryan Schmiderer of Pacific, Mo., for “The Miser” and Allison Ward of Hazelwood, Mo., for “Hedda Gabler.”
Known as the WWU Theatre Guild Awards, Best Actor and Actress honors are determined by a group of faculty, staff and community members.
Also nominated for Best Actress or Actor were Amanda Herriman of Eldon, Mo.; Rachel Petricka of Las Vegas, Nev.; George Spratt of Fulton, Mo., and Schmiderer. Nominated for their supporting roles were Bethany Hall of Des Moines, Iowa; Dustin West of Kansas City, Mo.; Walter (Jody) Paschal of Fulton, Mo.; Petricka, Watts and Olendorff.
Ward received a certificate of Technical Achievement for Achievement in Stage Management on “Don’t Dress For Dinner.”
The “Outstanding Achievement in Theatre” Award went to West. The award is given to the individual who demonstrates exceptional mainstage artistry in some capacity far beyond the necessary requirements of the production.
Newly initiated members of Alpha Psi Omega, theatre honor society, were recognized: Harrison Jones of Fulton, Mo.; of Carrollton, Texas; Herriman and Watts.
Productions planned for the 2009-10 theatre season were also announced. The season will include the musical “Kiss Me Kate,” Noel Coward’s “Blythe Spirit,” “Down the Road” and “The Diviners.”
