Anthony Clark, assistant professor of economics, and other members of the business division presented the assignment to them at the beginning of the semester. Students divided into seven teams and began working on their project, in addition to their normal coursework.
Throughout the semester the students acted as entrepreneurs starting a business. They compiled research from students and faculty, developed a marketing plan, created a financial plan based on their budget, chose products and services for their coffee shop and picked a name.
“Overall I've been very impressed with the students' ideas for the coffee shop, and it will be exciting next year to see those ideas put into action," said Clark.
Students are looking at three possible locations for the coffee shop: McNutt Campus Center, the commuter lounge in Burton Business Building, and the lower level of Tucker Dining Hall, in a room formerly known as Woody’s.
When their research is finished, it will be compiled into a business plan. The groups will make formal presentations at 2 p.m. Dec. 4 in Burton room 100. Following the presentations, the proposals will be presented to the administration.
“Ultimately the coffee shop will serve as a good social atmosphere and study area for students,” said Bradley Dempsey of Bowling Green, Mo., a student in the class.
“Our hope is that since this coffee shop is being created by students, it's something that students will use and enjoy,” Clark said.
