Since the fall of 1967, the Fulton Board of Associates has sponsored an annual fund drive to secure local support for Westminster and William Woods. Each year, more than 90 volunteers lend their time, calling on businesses and individual contributors. Very few communities of comparable size show this type of dedication and commitment.
The money raised is divided equally between the two institutions, and the gifts help fund scholarships for outstanding students in Callaway County.
William Woods University students currently receiving scholarships through the Fulton Colleges Fund and Board of Associates are Ryan Back, Kristin Bailey, Amanda Hosenfelt, Mary Payne, Cheryl Perkins, T.J. Quick, Kim Small and Alisha Woods.
Scholarship recipients at Westminster College are Erin Baysinger, Stephanie Beamer, Jordan Beever, Morgan Campbell, Ashley Harrison, Andrew Revelle and Jenna Smith.
Last year, volunteers raised more than $54,000 for the fund, which also assists both institutions with operating expenses. The Fulton Colleges Fund Drive has raised more than $1 million in the past 38 years.
Each year, the board invited a local business, individual or organization to offer a $2,500 challenge grant to match increases over the previous year. This year The Callaway Bank will provide the challenge grant.
Bruce Harris, president of The Callaway Bank, is a large supporter of the Fulton Colleges Drive, and he would like to see even more contributions to this year’s event.
“The value of Westminster College and William Woods University to our community is often overlooked. The quality of life that we enjoy as compared to many similar sized communities around the state is much greater in large part due to the contributions these two institutions, their employees and students make to our community,” he said.
“Your contribution to the Fulton Colleges Fund is not an expense. It is an investment in our community.”
Debbie LaRue, Board of Associates president, encourages all to get involved.
“For nearly 40 years, the Fulton Colleges Fund has assisted Callaway County students who choose to attend Westminster College and William Woods University. This is a significant sign of support between our community and our institutions of higher education.”
She added, “I am honored to be a part of such a worthwhile effort. Please join us to ensure the Fulton College’s Fund’s continued support of the Callaway County students and our college and university.”
Preliminary results will be reported during a luncheon Sept. 15 at Robertson Dining Hall on the Westminster College campus.
Individuals wishing to make a donation should contact Brenda Foster at William Woods, 592-4219, or Kathy Richey Liddle at Westminster, 592-5370.
