Digital filmmaking has joined broadcasting, journalism, public relations and speech communications as concentrations within the communication major.
Already a popular concentration, in its first year it has attracted 10-20 percent of the students enrolled in the communication program. The program is geared toward communication students, but is open to anyone who meets the prerequisites and is willing to put effort into their projects.
“Several of our courses within the curriculum touch on aspects of digital filmmaking and spark the interest of a number of communication majors,” Dustin Lawhorn, instructor of communication, said.
“Students have repeatedly asked for more coursework to hone skills in digital media and expressed an interest in working in this field.”
Among the courses offered are scriptwriting, production (lighting, cinematography, special effects), postproduction (editing, sound, composing), directing for camera and stage, and film classes. As seniors, students will be involved in the production of a film.
Pursuing the new concentration will not be easy.
“Because of the rigorous nature of the major, students in the major are expected to demonstrate a level of dedication, effort and ethical behavior consistent with that demanded within the profession,” Lawhorn said.
