U.S. Senator
Claire McCaskill
gave
her mother an early Mother’s Day gift by
speaking at William Woods University’s
commencement on May 9.
Her mother,
Betty Ann McCaskill
, a
1948 graduate of William Woods, was
in the audience to hear the speech and
watch as her daughter received an
honorary degree.
“My mother never forgave me for going
to Mizzou instead of William Woods,”
McCaskill told the graduates. “The three
most important women in my life all
attended William Woods,” she said,
citing her mother, grandmother
and aunt.
In presenting the honorary degree,
H. Dale LaRue
, a member of the WWU
Board of Trustees, noted that McCaskill
“sets the pace.” She was the frst woman
to ever give birth while she was an
active member of the Missouri
Legislature. She was the frst female
Jackson County prosecutor. After
serving as state auditor, she became
the frst person to ever defeat a sitting
Missouri governor in a primary election.
And, in 2006, she was the frst woman
elected to the United States Senate
from Missouri.
A record-setting total of 625 students
received diplomas during the weekend
(the previous high was 591 two years
ago). With ceremonies in August and
December, the combined number
of WWU graduates since last
May is 1,359.
