University Advancement Update
Scott Gallagher
V.P. of University Advancement
With the proliferation of e-mail, texting and the Internet,
we have begun to lose the importance and meaning
of many words. Often we exaggerate and overuse
words to the extent that they have lost much of
their original meaning.
I mention this because I am going to use a word that falls
into this category, but it is the only word that adequately
describes our donors—that word is “extraordinary.”
Just a few years ago, WWU's alumni giving rate
hovered between 4 and 7 percent. We had few major
donors, no President’s Club Giving Society, and limited
personal contact with alumni and friends.
A visit to campus bears witness to the transformational
changes we have achieved through your generosity. We
have added three new residence halls; refurbished Helen
Stephens Sports Complex, the observatory, Tucker Dining
Hall and Aldridge Recreation Center; built an additional
indoor riding arena; rebuilt Junior Lake; added or replaced
residence hall air conditioning; added technology to
virtually all of our classrooms and, of course, made
scholarships possible for our students.
This partial list is a reminder of all the things you, our
donors, have made possible. Your fnancial donations
have contributed to WWU’s overall success. I am proud
to say that we have just completed another year with a
balanced budget.
Last year we welcomed the largest incoming class on
record, and everything points to another record class
this fall.
We are all struggling through an uncertain economic
situation, but our donors have continued to support
WWU. Alumni giving has risen to nearly 20 percent,
but our long-term goal is to increase it in excess of
30 percent—a very realistic target. With increased
economic pressures on our students and their
families, your gift is more important than ever.
If you have not made a gift to the annual fund, I
encourage you to consider making a donation when
our students call this year. Every contribution, no
matter the size, has an impact on the daily lives
of WWU students.
I would like to thank those of you who are consistent
annual fund donors and invite you to join me in
becoming a member of the President’s Club Giving
Society. You have made such a difference in our living
and learning environment, but we want to continue to
build on our fund-raising success.
The support you have provided William Woods
University has made a difference to every student
on this campus. On behalf of the entire university
community, thank you. I can say without hesitation
that you are truly extraordinary.
