The musical Les Misérables is set amidst the backdrop of the 1832 revolution in France. Based on the historical novel of Victor Hugo – an eyewitness to the events -- it’s central theme is that of social injustice. The climactic scenes in the story revolve around the unsuccessful attempts by idealists and their allies in the slums of Paris to bring justice to the people. Not only is there a rich historical context for the musical/novel, but the story gives us a window into vast changes sweeping across Europe in the 19th century. 1 Point
