Evening Programs Catalog

Graduation/Commencement

All recipients of degrees awarded by the University are encouraged to participate in the first Commencement activity conducted by the University subsequent to the completion of all degree requirements.

Specifics regarding Commencement activities are contained in the general catalog of the University. The general regulations of the University pertaining to Commencement published in the general catalog and elsewhere under the authority of the Dean of the Graduate College are applicable to graduate students.

Participation in Commencement

IF students are enrolled in classes through WWU and the last class ends PRIOR to the graduation date, they may participate. It is assumed that they will pass the class. If the WWU class ends AFTER commencement, the student may petition for approval to “walk short”. Students wishing to “walk short” should request permission in writing to the office of the Dean of the Graduate College.

IF, however, they are enrolled in courses elsewhere, taking CLEP, independent study, etc., they need to have official transcripts to the registrar’s office by the first day of the month, two months prior to the graduation month(March 1st, June 1st, October 1st).

Policy for “walking short”

Because cohort degree programs may be completed shortly after a regular May or December commencement, the department has established the following policy to allow students to petition to “walk short” or participate in a graduation ceremony that is scheduled before the final class is complete.

  • May Graduation:

A student may petition to participate in the May graduation if the final class for the degree is completed before July 1. The written request must be sent to the Vice President and Dean of the Graduate Collegeno later than April 1. The degree will be officially conferred on the confirmation date following completion of all requirements.

  • December Graduation:

A student may petition to participate in the December graduation if the final class for the degree is completed before December 31. The written request must be sent to the Vice President and Dean for the Graduate Collegeno later than November 1. The degree will be officially conferred on the confirmation date following completion of all requirements.

If a student needs confirmation of degree completion before official conferral for any reason, the University will provide a letter stating that the student has completed all requirements for the degree.

*Upon request, the registrar’s office will provide letters of completion indicating that students have completed all graduation requirements, but their degree will not be conferred until the next graduation date. Degrees are conferred in May, August and December only.
