Your new resume should NOT be like your first resume.
Employers are searching for candidates with proven track records to solve specific problems unique to their organizations. Today, you must be prepared to research the needs of an organization and tailor your resume to show how your past accomplishments meet the employer's criteria. You can then tailor each resume to include the specific accomplishments that relate to a particular employer's needs.
Below are a few tips to help you rethink the design of your resume.
- Provide a summary, not an objective. Summarize three or four skills that match the employer's needs. These highlights can appear in a short summary paragraph or in a quick bullet format.
Relevant Skills:- Human Resource Management
- Customer Service Training
- Written and Verbal Communication
- Computer Programming in Basic
- Lead with experience, not with education. Education information should be included on your resume; however, it is better to place it toward the bottom of the document. Your actual work experience is more important, more current and more relevant.
- Include accomplishments, not just responsibilities. Don’t just tell employers what you did; also tell them the outcome of your actions. These statements detail the results of your problem-solving abilities and identify the specific problems you can solve.
- Proposed and tracked annual $500,000 departmental budget.
- Met deadlines and operated within budget for past three years.
- Include relevant activities, not hobbies. The experienced candidate should approach clubs, organizations, and outside interest with caution. Activities that relate directly to your self-improvement efforts and the options you are seeking are important to include. Hobby-type activities should not be included.
- This resume should not be limited to one page. Often, the experienced candidate has enough relevant accomplishments and experiences on which to expand to an additional page. You should include all relevant information without concern for keeping to the only page limit.
Note: If you have not worked for a large, well-known company, you may want to provide a quick one-sentence description of the operation.
