Helen Stephens Sports Complex
The sports complex is named for Helen Stephens, WWU’s Olympic athlete. Helen Stephens was a graduate of William Woods who gained worldwide notice upon winning two gold medals in sprinting events in the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics. Inside the complex, you will find our Owls athletic teams practicing in the Angeline Schwab Grow Multipurpose Room or competing in intercollegiate competitions in the recently renovated Anderson Arena. Dana and Sue Anderson, a WWU alumna and member of the Board of Trustees, graciously donated funds to renovate the arena in 2007 with a new gymnasium floor, updates to locker room facilities, new seating for spectators, improved lighting, and a new PA system. You will also find Helen Stephens’ memorabilia on display in the lobby, as well as the offices for Owls Athletics staff
William Woods competes in NAIA intercollegiate athletics and is a part of the American Midwest Conference. Men and women participate in track and cross country, basketball, golf, soccer, and competitive cheerleading. In addition, women compete in volleyball and softball, and men compete in baseball.
