Bennington Leads Owls to Show Me Summer Shootout Win
( FULTON, MO., Sept. 1) - Sophomore Jada Bennington (Beloit, Wis.) fired a final round 73 to help lead the William Woods University women's golf team to a twenty stroke win in the Show Me Summer Shootout at Tanglewood Golf Course. The Owls had to rally from ten strokes behind after play on Monday to finally pull away from a talented Arkansas- Fort Smith team.
Making the Owls come back more impressive is the fact they did it without sophomore Ashlee Daly ( Columbia, Mo.) who had to withdraw due to a wrist injury, forcing the Owls to play with only four players. "Once the tournament starts you cannot substitute for an injured player, so we knew we didn't have a score to drop", said Owls Head Golf Coach Barry Doty after the final round.
“I'm very pleased with the poise we showed in the final round. Jada Bennington played great, I expect her to have an All-American caliber year ", added Doty.
Bennington took home individual honors with rounds of 77 and 73 for a 150 total as the Owls swept all five spots on the All-Tournament team. Sophomore Elizabeth Welker (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) and freshmen Naomi Starr ( Columbia, Mo.) finished in a tie for second with two-day totals of 157. Senior Amanda Purcell (Droitwich, England) finished in fourth with two rounds of 79 for a 158 total. Sophomore Stephanie Bruemmer ( Jefferson City, Mo.) rounded out the All-Tournament team with rounds of 79 and 80 for a 159 total.
Freshmen Lindsey Johnson ( Springfield, Mo.) had a solid tournament with rounds of 78 and 86.
The Owls will travel to Jacksonville, Illinois to compete in the Lady Blues Invitational at the Links Golf Course on September 5th and 6th. The Owls won the 2008 Championship by over fifty strokes.
