William Woods Women's Basketball to Forfeit Games
(FULTON, Mo., Jan. 16)--
The William Woods University women’s basketball team will forfeit seven victories for inadvertently using an ineligible player during the 2008-09 basketball season. The Owls drop from 13-1 (2-0 in the American Midwest Conference) to 6-8 (2-0 in the AMC).

"A mistake was made during the eligibility process," said Athletics Director Larry York. "We self-reported our findings to the AMC and the NAIA, and regret that we will have to forfeit the first nine contests of the 2008-09 season."

The University became aware that it may have used an ineligible player prior to the Winter Break. At that time, the University began an internal review into the eligibility of the student-athlete in question, and withheld her from further competition. Upon completion of the internal review, it was determined that there was a misinterpretation of part-time enrollment at a previously attended community college, and the student-athlete in question did not meet the eligibility guidelines of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the American Midwest Conference (AMC).

Athletics Director Larry York submitted the findings to the AMC eligibility board and the NAIA. The AMC has recommended, and the NAIA has approved, the following actions:
1.) William Woods shall notify all applicable institutions that an ineligible student was allowed to compete. Where appropriate, forfeits are to be awarded.
2.) The student-athlete will be charged with one season of competition.
3.) William Woods' intercollegiate athletics program is hereby officially reprimanded. A reprimand is an institutional notification that a violation has occurred and requires a written response for the corrective measures to be taken.

In accordance with NAIA by-laws, the individual statistics of any student-athlete declared ineligible by a member institution, conference, or the NAIA for any portion of the season shall not be included in the national statistical ranking.

Also, team statistics in any completed contest which is termed a forfeit will stand. The actual results of the contest as well as the coach's record will be changed to reflect the forfeit.

Additionally, all the statistics from the student-athlete in question shall be deleted from the records. Individual statistics earned by eligible students shall stand. All team and individual statistics for the offending opponents shall remain intact and unaffected.

The Owls will forfeit the following contests:
11/1 vs. Baptist Bible College
11/4 vs. Culver-Stockton College
11/7 at William Penn College
11/10 vs. Benedictine College
11/18 at College of the Ozarks (lost 61-84)
