Smith Scores Game Winner For Owls
(FAYETTE, Mo., Oct. 14) - The William Woods University men's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Central Methodist University on Wednesday night. Due to poor weather, the Owls had not played since October 3rd. After a 10-day layoff, William Woods returned to the field and collected its fifth win of the season.
CMU scored the first goal of the evening in the 14th minute. Pat McVey found the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
William Woods evened the match right before the end of the first half. Senior David Haberstock (Waynesville, Mo.) scored in the 41st minute to tie the match at one.
With just over seven minutes remaining in the contest, senior Pete Smith (St. Louis, Mo.) scored to give the Owls a 2-1 lead. The Owls would hold the Eagles at bay the rest of the match to earn the win.
The Owls outshot the Eagles 15-13 in the win. Both teams put eight shots on goal for the match. Freshman Robert Thibodeaux earned the win in goal for the Owls. Thibodeaux recorded seven saves in the victory.
WWU improves to 5-4-1 on the season. CMU falls to 5-6-1 on the year.
William Woods will return to action on October 17th at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
