(FULTON, Mo., Oct. 3) - The William Woods University men's soccer team played visiting Mount Mercy College to a 2-2 tie on Saturday afternoon in Fulton, Mo. The teams played two 10-minute overtime periods, but neither could find the back of the net.

 

WWU scored in the 15th minute to take an early 1-0 lead. Senior Zach Fox (Kansas City, Mo.) scored on an assist from Oliver Dyson (Newark, England) to give the Owls the early lead.

 

Mount Mercy tied the match in the 42nd minute on a goal from Nebojsa Jevtovic. The teams went into the half tied 1-1.

 

William Woods regained the lead in the 67th minute on a goal from senior Steve Brocks (Portsmouth, England). Brocks scored on an assist from Eric Ooton (Kansas City, Mo.). However, with six minutes remaining in the match, MMC tied the game on a goal from Marko Urlic.

 

Neither team had many scoring opportunities in the two overtime periods. WWU had one shot on goal, Mount Mercy had two shots on goal. After 110 minutes, the match ended in a 2-2 tie.

 

WWU recorded 16 shots for the match, six on goal. MMC recorded 18 shots on the day, nine on goal. Senior Nate Thackeray (Manchester, England) had seven saves in goal for William Woods. Joshua Putz tallied four saves for Mount Mercy.

 

MMC is now 6-3-4 on the season. WWU is now 4-4-1.

 

Saturday was Senior Day at Firley Field. Prior to kick-off, head coach Nathan Mason paid tribute to Eric Ooton, Pete Smith, David Haberstock, Steve Brocks, Oliver Dyson, Zack Johnson, David Fritz, Zach Fox and Nathan Thackeray.

 

William Woods will return to action on October 8th. The Owls will host AMC foe Williams Baptist College at 2 pm.
