Nathan Mason Hired as Associate Head Men's Soccer Coach

(FULTON, Mo., March 26)--William Woods University has announced the hiring of Nathan Mason as Associate Head Men’s Soccer Coach.  Mason comes to William Woods from Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa.  Mason spent one year as the head coach at Iowa Central CC.  During his one season at Iowa Central CC, the Triton’s went 8-10-1, and advanced to the Region XI Tournament.  They were eliminated in the second round of the Regional Tournament by Marshalltown Community College.

Prior to Iowa Central CC, Coach Mason served as the head women’s soccer coach at Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kansas, in 2006.  Mason guided Neosho CC to the Region Semi-finals that season.  The two previous seasons, Mason served as an assistant men’s coach at Neosho County.

“Coach Nathan Mason brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to William Woods University as he begins a new era in men’s soccer,” said Larry York, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at William Woods. “Coach Mason has successful head coaching experience and since he played at McKendree University he is very familiar with the other conference schools. Coach Josh Ganson will continue to coach the women and Coach Mason will work exclusively with the men. Both teams will receive the individual attention they need to be able to compete at a high level with other NAIA institutions, particularly those in our conference and region."

Post-Season Awards Announced (Nov. 1)

(FULTON, Mo., Nov. 1)--The American Midwest Conference released the All-Conference and Academic teams today.  Neil Julian was named to the Honorable Mention All-AMC team.  Julian, a senior midfielder from Red Deer, Canada, appeared in 11 games for the Owls.  He recorded 2 goals and four points.

The following student-athletes were named to the All-Academic team:

Owls Lose Final Regular Season Match (Oct. 21)

(FULTON, Mo., Oct 21)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team ended the regular season with a 0-2 loss at the hands of Avila University on Saturday afternoon in Fulton, Missouri.

Brian Berger was fouled by the William Woods goalie with forty-three seconds remaining in the first half.  Berger scored on the penalty kick to give Avila a 1-0 halftime lead.

Samuel Sowle added a goal for Avila ten minutes into the second half to secure the win.

William Woods outshot Avila 13-4.  Chris Kalicak recorded nine saves for Avila.  Nate Thackeray recorded two saves in the loss for William Woods.

William Woods falls to 2-12 on the season.  They will now wait to see if they are awarded a post-season match.

Owls Drop Final AMC Contest (Oct. 20)

(FULTON, Mo., Oct. 20)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team lost 4-0 to visiting McKendree University on Saturday afternoon.  McKendree entered the contest as the 22nd ranked team in the NAIA.

With seven minutes remaining in the half, and playing a man-up, McKendree took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal by Sam James.  Playing two men-up for a majority of the second half, the Bearcats would add three more goals to secure the victory.

McKendree outshot William Woods 20-4.  Santiago Hampton and Brad Dietrich combined for three saves for the Bearcats.  Nate Thackeray recorded eleven saves in the loss.

McKendree, the regular season American Midwest Champion, improves to 14-1 on the season, and 6-0 in AMC play.  William Woods falls to 2-11 overall, and 2-5 in the AMC.

William Woods will conclude their regular season on Sunday, October 21st.  They will host Avila University.

William Woods Falls to Hannibal-LaGrange (Oct. 17)

(FULTON, Mo., Oct. 17)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team dropped their fourth straight decision on Wednesday afternoon.  The Owls lost 2-1 to visiting Hannibal-LaGrange College.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal by Kevin Zimmermann.  He would add another goal early in the second half to give HLC a 2-0 lead.

Oliver Dyson cut the lead in half with 13:00 minutes remaining in the match.  The Owls could not close the gap any further.  The Owls are now 2-10 overall and 2-4 in the AMC.

Hannibal-LaGrange outshot the Owls 12-5.  Nate Thackeray recorded nine saves for the Owls in the loss.  The men will return to action on Saturday, October 20th, at home versus AMC foe McKendree University.

William Woods Falls at William Jewell (Oct. 9)

(MARSHALL, Mo., Oct. 9)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team dropped their third straight decision Tuesday at William Jewell College.

The Cardinals scored four goals in the first half, and four more in the second half en route to the victory.

The Owls (2-9) were outshot 21-15.  They will return to action on Wednesday, October 17th, versus Hannibal-LaGrange College.

Woods Drops AMC Contest to UI-Springfield (Oct. 6)

(SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Oct. 6)--The Owls dropped to 2-8 overall, and 2-3 in the AMC, with a 7-1 loss at the University of Illinois Springfield on Saturday.  The Prairie Stars improve to 8-5-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

Ricardo Ambrosini scored the lone goal for the Owls in the loss.  Nate Thackeray was credited with nine save for William Woods.

The Owls return to action on Tuesday, October 9th, at William Jewell University.

Owls Fall at Columbia (Oct. 4)

(COLUMBIA, Mo., Oct. 4)--The Columbia Cougar soccer team defeated William Woods University by a score of 3-1 Thursday in American Midwest Conference action. Columbia improves to 4-8-0 on the season and 3-1 in AMC play, while the Owls fall to 2-7-0 and 2-2 in league play.

In the first half, Zak Cobb helped the Cougars jump out to a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game when he scored on an unassisted goal.  Columbia held the led until the 39th minute when the Owls’ Ricardo Ambrosini scored to tie it up going into halftime.

In the second half, Sam Gelven scored the remaining two goals to push Columbia to the win.  The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for William Woods.

Owls Win Second Straight (Sept. 29)

(FULTON, Mo., Sept. 29)-– The William Woods University men’s soccer team improved to 2-6 overall and 2-1 in the American Midwest Conference with a 3-2 victory over visiting Williams Baptist College.

Williams Baptist jumped on top early with a goal in the 38th minute of the first half.  Ricardo Ambrosini tied the game with a goal of his own seven minutes later.  Williams Baptist added a second goal and went into the half with a 2-1 lead.

Neil Julian tied the game in the 31st minute off an assist from Javier Poveda-Lopez.  Lopez would score the game winning goal with 10 minutes remaing in the game.

The Owls have now won two straight after starting the season 0-6.  They will return to action on Thursday, October 4th, at AMC rival Columbia College.

Owls Pick Up First Win (Sept. 27)

(St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 27)-- The William Woods University men's soccer team picked up their first victory of the season on Wednesday, September 26th, at AMC rival Harris-Stowe State University.  The Owls defeated the Hornets 2-1 in St. Louis, Missouri.

William Woods collected two first half goals from freshman Cory Herchenroeder (St. Louis, Missouri).  The Owls took a 2-1 lead into the half, and held on to pick up an important American Midwest Conference victory.

Sophomore Nate Thackeray (Manchester, United Kingdom) recorded four saves in the victory.

The Owls stand at 1-6 on the season, and 1-1 in the AMC.  They will return to action on Saturday, September 29th versus Williams Baptist College.  Game time is 1:00 pm at Firley field.

Owls Drop Tough Decision to Central Methodist (Sept. 21)

(FAYETTE, Mo. Sept. 21)-– The William Woods University men’s soccer team showed signs of turning the corner in a 1-0 loss at Central Methodist University on Friday afternoon.

The Owls went on the offensive early and often in their match-up with the Eagles.  Ricardo Ambrosini had a good look in the 37th minute of the first half.  CMU goalie Brent Tegerdine made a tremendous recovery and save to keep the Owls off the scoreboard.

Neither team would score in the first half, and it would be another 36 minutes before CMU could find the back of the net.  Joseph Glasscock put a header in off a direct kick with 8:30 remaining in the game, but the Owls would not give up.  WWU kept the pressure on the Eagles with a flurry of shots with the clock winding down, including a corner kick attempt with seconds left in the game.

The win took CMU to 4-2-1 on the season.  William Woods falls to 0-6 on the year.  They will return to action on Wednesday, September 26th, at Harris-Stowe State University.

Woods Drops AMC Opener (Sept. 18)

(ST. LOUIS, Mo., Sept 18)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team opened American Midwest Conference play with a 3-2 defeat at Missouri Baptist University.  Neil Julian and Ricardo Ambrosini netted goals for the Owls who fall to 0-5 on the season, and 0-1 in the AMC.

The Owls and Spartans (the 4th ranked team in Region V) went to halftime tied at two.  Jacob Conrad put the Spartans up for good with his second goal of the match in the second half.  Missouri Baptist improves to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in AMC play.

William Woods will return to action on Friday, September 21st, at Central Methodist University.

Woods Falls at home to Friends University (Sept. 14)

(FULTON, Mo., Sept. 14)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team fell to 0-4 with a 0-6 loss to visiting Friends University Friday afternoon at Firley Field.

Friends score three goals in the first half and three in the second to secure the victory.  The Falcons outshot the Owls 19-16.  Friends improves to 3-0-1 on the season.

The Owls will return to action on September 18th at American Midwest Conference rival Missouri Baptist University.

Smith Honored by AMC (Sept. 13)

(FULTON, Mo., Sept. 13)--Pete Smith has been selected the American Midwest Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.

Smith, a 5-foot-9 sophomore midfielder from St. Louis, Mo., scored the only goal for the Owls in a 2-1 loss against Culver-Stockton College. This is the first AMC Player of the Week honor for Smith.

Owls Fall 2-1 to Culver-Stockton (Aug. 8)

(FULTON, Mo., Sept. 8th)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team fell to 0-2 with a 2-1 loss at the hands of visiting Culver-Stockton College.

After a scoreless first half, CSC found the back of the net twice in the second half.  Junior Adam Klingele (Quincy, Illinois) accounted for both goals in the Wildcat win.  Sophomore Pete Smith (St. Louis, Missouri) accounted for the lone William Woods goal.

The Owls outshot the Wildcats 10-7 in the loss.  CSC improves to 1-3 while WWU drops to 0-2.  William Woods will return to action on September 10th at Missouri Valley College.

Owls Fall to #1 Graceland (Sept. 2)

(LAMONI, Ia. Sept. 2)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team dropped their 2007 opener 0-5 to #1 Graceland University.  The YellowJackets are the defending NAIA National Champions.

Graceland took a 2-0 lead into the half.  They would add three more goals in the second half en route to the 5-0 win.

The Owls will return to action on Saturday, September 8th at 3:00 pm versus Culver-Stockton College.
