Men’s Soccer All-Conference Announced

(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 14)--Two members of the William Woods University men’s soccer team received All-American Midwest Conference recognition. Pete Smith (St. Louis, Mo.) and Steve Brocks (Portsmouth, United Kingdom) have been named to the Honorable Mention All-AMC Team.

Smith, a junior midfielder, from St. Louis, Mo., recorded four goals, one assist, and nine points. Brocks, a junior midfielder, from Portsmouth, United Kingdom) recorded five goals, three assists, and 13 points.

Six Owls were awarded Academic All-AMC:

Ricardo Ambrosini - Senior from Guayaquil, Equador

Greg Baker - Sophomore from St. Peters, Mo.

Steve Brocks - Junior from Portsmouth, United Kingdom

Zack Johnson - Junior from St. Peters, Mo.

Javier Poveda-Lopez - Senior from Madrid, Spain

Adam Reed - Senior from Columbia, Mo.

The William Woods University men's soccer team lost 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the American Midwest Conference tournament at Columbia College on Saturday. The Owls finish the year 9-9-1.

The Owls, 2-12 last season, finish the 2008 season under first year coach Nathan Mason with the most wins by a WWU team since 2000 (13-7).

Owls Men's Soccer Ends Season With Loss at Columbia

(COLUMBIA, Mo., Nov. 8)--The William Woods University men's soccer team lost 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the American Midwest Conference tournament at Columbia College on Saturday. The Owls finish the year 9-9-1.

Dylan Barduzzi scored in the fourth to give the Cougars the early lead.

The Owls , 2-12 last season, finish the 2008 season under first year coach Nathan Mason with the most wins by a WWU team since 2000 (13-7).

Zach FoxFox Named AMC Player of the Week

Release provided by the American Midwest Conference

(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 4)--Zach Fox from William Woods University and Chance Walker from the University of Illinois at Springfield have been honored by the American Midwest Conference for their play in games from Oct. 27-Nov. 1.

Fox, a junior midfielder from Kansas City, Mo., was named the AMC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Fox provided the Owls' offense in a 2-1 home victory against Missouri Valley College. Fox scored both goals for William Woods in the effort. The pair of goals doubled Fox's season total to four. He has scored 11 points for the Owls, who are 9-8-1 heading into AMC Tournament play.

Zach FoxMen’s Soccer Defeats Missouri Valley

(FULTON, Mo., Oct. 29)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team defeated visiting Missouri Valley College 2-1 at Firley Field on Wednesday evening.  On a night where the William Woods soccer team celebrated senior night, the Owls concluded the 2008 regular season on a winning note.

Missouri Valley scored in the 16th minute on a goal from Carlos Arribas to give the Vikings an early lead.  Zach Fox (Kansas City, Mo.) recorded a goal in the 33rd minute for the Owls to tie the match at one. 

With the match tied after one half of play, Fox added another goal with seven minutes remaining in the second half to secure the win for William Woods.  Oliver Dyson (Newark, United Kingdom) recorded two assists in the win for William Woods.

Prior to the match, the Owls recognized seniors Travis Foust (Jenks, Okla.), Adam Reed (Columbia, Mo.), Ricardo Ambrosini (Guayaquil, Equador), Javier Poveda-Lopez (Madrid, Spain), and Trevor McBride (Washington, Mo.).

The Owls finish the regular season 9-8-1.  They will open the American Midwest Conference post-season tournament on Saturday, November 8th.  They will travel to Columbia College.  The time of the match is to be determined.

Neale Goodeve Goodeve Named American Midwest Conference Defensive

Player of the Week

(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 28)--Dylan Barduzzi of Columbia College and Neale Goodeve from William Woods University have been recognized by the American Midwest Conference for their play on the soccer field from Oct. 20-26.


Goodeve, a freshman midfielder from Portsmouth, United Kingdom, helped anchor the Owls' defensive effort in a 2-0 loss to Hannibal-LaGrange College, which is ranked No. 5 in the latest NAIA coaches' poll. It is the first AMC Player of the Week honor for Goodeve.

The Owls are 8-8-1 on the season, and 3-4 in the American Midwest Conference.  They will host Missouri Valley College on Wednesday, October 29th.  The final regular season home match will begin at 5:00 pm.

OwlsMen’s Soccer Falls at #5 Hannibal-LaGrange

(HANNIBAL, Mo., Oct. 25)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team dropped an American Midwest Conference match at #5 Hannibal-LaGrange College on Saturday.  Hannibal-LaGrange defeated the visiting Owls 2-0.

Hannibal-LaGrange took a 1-0 lead into the half on a goal from Estevo Franco.  Franco scored in the 28th minute to put the Trojans ahead.  Hannibal-LaGrange outshot William Woods 13-5 in the first half.

Kevin Zimmerman scored the final goal of the match for Hannibal-LaGrange in the 78th minute.  The fifth ranked Trojans improve to 13-2-1 on the season.

Nate Thackeray (Manchester, United Kingdom) collected nine saves in goal for the Owls.  Thackeray had five saves in the first half, and four saves in the second half.

In the last week, the Owls have lost two matches to teams ranked in the NAIA top 15 by very competitive scores.  The Owls lost at #15 Bellevue University on October 19th, by a score of 1-0.

William Woods falls to 8-8-1 on the season, and 3-4 in the AMC.  They will return to action on Wednesday, October 29th.  The Owls will host Missouri Valley College at 5:00 pm.

OwlsOwls Split Nebraska Trip

(FREMONT, Nebr., Oct. 19)--The William Woods University men's soccer team split a pair of matches in Nebraska on Saturday and Sunday.  The Owls lost the opening match on Saturday at #18 Bellevue University 1-0 in overtime.  William Woods defeated Midland Lutheran College on Sunday 5-1 to earn the split.

Mark Heath-Preston scored the winning goal six minutes into the overtime period for Bellevue.  The 18th ranked Bruins have now won six straight matches.  The loss snaps the Owls four match winning streak.

Nate Thackeray (Manchester, United Kingdom) recorded eight saves in the loss.

The Owls got back in the win column on Sunday afternoon at Midland Lutheran.  William Woods scored five goals in the first half and cruised to the 5-1 victory.

William Woods received goals from Zach Fox (2) (Kansas City, Mo.), Eric Ooton (Kansas City, Mo.), Steve Brocks (Portsmouth, United Kingdom), and Oliver Dyson (Newark, United Kingdom).  Ooton, Dyson, and Fox also recorded assists in the win.  Thackeray recorded three saves in goal for the Owls.

William Woods improves to 8-7-1 on the season.  They will return to action on October 25th at American Midwest Conference foe Hannibal-LaGrange College.

OwlsOwls Win at Williams Baptist College

(WALNUT RIDGE, Ark., Oct. 14)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team collected its seventh victory of the season with a 3-1 win at American Midwest Conference foe Williams Baptist College on Tuesday afternoon.

Mohammed Aden scored in the 27th minute to give Williams Baptist the early advantage.  Six minutes later, Pete Smith (St. Louis, Mo.) scored on a rebound to tie the match at one.

William Woods pulled away in the second half on goals from Ricky Ooton (Kansas City, Mo.) and Dave Haberstock (Waynesville, Mo.). 

Javier Poveda-Lopez (Madrid, Spain), Adam Reed (Columbia, Mo.) and Zach Fox (Kansas City, Mo.) each recorded an assist in the win for William Woods.

The Owls improve to 7-6-1 on the season, and 3-3 in the AMC.  The last time the Owls won seven or more games was during the 2004 season (8-8-2).  The 2004 season was also the last time the Owls collected three AMC victories (3-3).

William Woods will return to action on Saturday, October 18th.  They will travel to Bellevue University for a non-conference match.  The Owls will then challenge Midland Lutheran College on Sunday, October 19th, in Fremont, Nebraska.

Nate ThackerayThackeray Named AMC Defensive Player of the Week

(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 14)--Jakub Piotrowski from the University of Illinois at Springfield and Nate Thackeray from William Woods University have been recognized for their performances on the soccer field last week by the American Midwest Conference.

Thackeray, a junior goalkeeper from Manchester, United Kingdom, won all three of his starts last week, including a 2-1, double-overtime victory at home against AMC foe the University of Illinois at Springfield. Thackeray combined to make nine saves in his three wins. The 3-0 week posted by Thackeray enabled the Owls to reach the .500 mark on the season at 6-6-1.

Owls Owls Beat UI-Springfield in 2OT

(FULTON, Mo., Oct. 11)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team defeated visiting University of Illinois-Springfield 2-1 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Firley Field.

The Owls scored first on a goal from Eric Ooton.  Ooton took an assist from Ricardo Ambrosini three minutes into the match and scored from the left post to give the Owls an early 1-0 lead.  Neither team could muster an offensive threat the remainder of the half.

The Owls would hold the lead until the 77th minute of the second half.  Frank Rodriguez broke free on the left post and chipped a shot over WWU goalie Nate Thackeray to tie the match 1-1.

Illinois-Springfield continued to test the Owl defense, but could not put a shot past Thackeray.  The Prairie Stars outshot the Owls 8-1 in the second half.

After a scoreless overtime period, it looked as if the match would end in a 1-1 tie.  In the second overtime, Ambrosini look a throw-in on the Owls offensive third and chipped it over his shoulder, and the UIS defender, then raced uncontested to goal.  After drawing the UIS goalie, Ambrosini sent a pass to a streaking Javier Poveda-Lopez.  Lopez tapped in the winning goal into the open net for the winner.

UIS outshot the Owls 13 to eight on the afternoon, including 4-3 on goal.  Nate Thackeray recorded three saves in goal for WWU.  Chance Walker recorded one save in goal for UIS.

This marks the first time the William Woods University men’s soccer team has defeated the University of Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars.

UIS falls to 7-5 overall, and 3-2 in the AMC.  William Woods improves to 6-6-1 overall, and 2-3 in the AMC.  The Owls will return to action on Tuesday, October 14th.  They will travel to Williams Baptist College.

David Fritz Owls Earn First AMC Victory

(FULTON, Mo., Oct. 8)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team earned its first American Midwest Conference win on Wednesday at Firley Field.  The Owls defeated visiting Harris-Stowe State University 4-1.

William Woods scored its first goal of the evening in the 35th minute of play on a goal from David Fritz (Des Moines, Iowa).  Fritz collected a loose ball off a direct kick and scored from the right post to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.  Steve Brocks (Portsmouth, United Kingdom) was credited with an assist on the play.  Seven minutes later, Adam Reed (Columbia, Mo.) scored off another loose ball in front of the HSSU goal.  Reed connected from the left post to give William Woods a 2-0 lead.

In the second half of play, the Owls increased its lead on a goal from Brocks.  Brocks intercepted a pass from the Hornet defense and fired a shot from the top of the box to give the Owls a 3-0 lead.

Harris-Stowe would not go down without a fight.  In the 65th minute, Mirza Kovacevic scored to cut the lead to 3-1.  Possession went back-and-forth until Cory Herchenroeder (St. Louis, Mo.) scored off a rebound to give the Owls a 4-1 lead in the 80th minute.

William Woods outshot Harris-Stowe 22-11.  The Owls recorded 13 shots on goal to the Hornets five.  Nate Thackeray (Manchester, United Kingdom) recorded four saves in goal for William Woods.  Matt Kerperien and ColbyPoindexter of Harris-Stowe recorded nine saves in the loss.

Harris-Stowe falls to 5-9 on the season, and 1-4 in the AMC.  William Woods improves to 5-6-1 on the season, and 1-3 in the AMC.  The Owls have now won back-to-back matches.  The win was an important one for the Owls.  They are currently in 6th place in the AMC ahead of Harris-Stowe.  Only six teams advance to post-season play.  The Owls have three AMC matches remaining.

The Owls will return to action on Saturday, October 11th.  William Woods will host the University of Illinois-Springfield in another AMC match at 2:00 pm.

Eric OotonOwls Top Eagles

(FULTON, Mo., Oct. 6)--The William Woods University Owls defeated visiting Avila University 3-1 Monday evening at Firley Field.  The Owls improve to 4-6-1 on the season.  Avila falls to 3-8-1 on the season.

The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute of play on a goal from Eric Ooton (Kansas City, Mo.).  Ooton broke free and fired a shot from the right post.  His shot sailed past the diving effort of goalie Chris Kalicak. 

Ooton would play a role in the second goal of the evening as well.  In the 26th minute, Ooton served a throw-in from the right corner in front of the Avila goal.  Dirk Bauer II (Des Moines, Iowa) began his run at the far post and headed a shot by Kalicak to give William Woods a 2-0 advantage.  The Owls would take the 2-0 lead into halftime.

Avila University would cut the lead in half on a goal from Roberto Camacho in the 62nd minute.  The Eagles sent a long shot into the box from the right corner.  After a scramble for possession, Camacho placed a header past WWU goalie Nate Thackeray (Manchester, United Kingdom).

The Eagles would not hold the Owls, or Eric Ooton, in check long.  Ooton intercepted a ball played back toward the AU keeper and scored his second goal of the evening in the 69th minute.  The Owls kept the pressure on at the offensive end the remainder of the match and collected their fourth victory of the season.  The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Owls.

WWU outshot AU 12-11 on the evening.  The Owls had five shots on goal to the Eagles three.  Thackeray recorded two saves in goal for William Woods.  Kalicak recorded two saves as well for Avila.

William Woods will return to action on Wednesday, October 8th.  The Owls will host American Midwest Conference foe Harris-Stowe State University.  The match will begin at 5:00 pm.

Owls Men's Soccer Fall in OT

(CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, Oct. 4)--The William Woods University men's soccer team dropped an overtime decision at Mt. Mercy College on Saturday.  The Owls lost 3-2.

The Owls took a 1-0 lead into the half on a goal from Ricardo Ambrosini in the 37th minute. Mt. Mercy tied the match in the 55th minute on a goal from Nick Miller. They took the lead in the 70th minute on a goal from Petar Triva.

Dirk Bauer took a pass from Nathan Thackeray in the 80th minute and tied the match at two. Neither team could find the net for the remaining ten minutes of regulation.

Triva scored the winning goal two minutes into the overtime period to give Mt. Mercy the victory.

William Woods falls to 3-6-1 on the season.  They will return to action on October 6th.  They will host Avila University.

Owls Owls Drop Match to Columbia

(FULTON, Mo., Oct. 2)--The William Woods University men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 American Midwest Conference match to visiting Columbia College on Thursday evening at Firley Field.

The Owls trailed 1-0 heading into the second half of play. Cory Herchenroeder (St. Louis, Mo.) took an assist from Oliver Dyson (Newark, United Kingdom) and tied the match at one with 15 minutes remaining in the match.

Columbia countered quickly with two goals within the next few minutes of play to gain a 3-1 advantage, and the win.

The Cougars outshot the Owls 8-4 in the match. Anthony Gascich (Kansas City, Mo.) recorded 5 saves in the loss.

Columbia improves to 4-5-1 on the season, and 2-1 in the American Midwest Conference. William Woods falls to 3-5-1 on the season, and 0-3 in the AMC.

Eric Ooton Owls Defeat Tabor

(FULTON, Mo., Sept. 29)--The William Woods University men's soccer team defeated visiting Tabor College 2-1 on Monday evening. The Owls improve to 3-4-1 on the season.

William Woods and Tabor went into the half tied 1-1. Tabor scored within the first two minutes to take an early 1-0 lead. The Owls would tie the match on a goal from Steve Brocks (Portsmouth, United Kingdom) with two minutes remaining in the half. Brocks took an assist from Ricardo Ambrosini (Guayaquil, Equador) to send the match into the half even.

The Owls Eric Ooton (Kansas City, Mo.) scored the winning goal with 27 minutes remaining in the match. Ooton scored off a rebound, after a shot attempt by Cory Herchenroeder (St. Louis, Mo.).

It a tight defensive battle, William Woods outshot Tabor College 8-7. Anthony Gascich (Kansas City, Mo.) recorded six saves in the shutout victory.

William Woods improves to 3-4-1. They will return to action on Thursday, October 2nd, versus Columbia College.

(LEBANON, Ill., Sept. 27)--The William Woods University men's soccer team dropped an 8-0 decision at McKendree University on Saturday evening.

The Owls trailed #4 McKendree University 3-0 at the half, then surrendered five second half goals in the loss. William Woods falls to 2-4-1 on the season, and 0-2 in the American Midwest Conference.

The Owls will return to action on Monday, September 29th, versus Tabor College.

Owls Owls Lose at Benedictine College

(ATCHISON, Kan., Sept. 20th)--The William Woods University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at Benedictine College on Saturday. The Owls drop to 2-3-1 on the season.

The Ravens found the back of the net early in the match. Sean Lewis scored from the top of the box five minutes into the match. Neither team could crack the other teams defense over the course of the next 85 minutes.

It was a back-and-fourth second half. Each team took turns making a run at each other to no avail. When it was all said and done, Benedictine had nine shots on goal, and William Woods had six shots on goal.

Anthony Gascich had five saves in goal for William Woods. Mark Saxby recorded three saves in the win for Benedictine.

The Owls will return to action on Saturday, September 27th. The Owls will return to American Midwest Conference play at McKendree University.

Pete SmithWilliam Woods Drops AMC Opener

(FULTON, Mo., Sept. 16)--The William Woods University men's soccer team dropped its American Midwest Conference opener to Missouri Baptist University on Tuesday evening at Firley Field. The Spartans defeated the Owls 4-2.

William Woods fell behind early in the match. Missouri Baptist recorded three goals to take a 3-0 advantage into the half.

The Spartans added another goal to take a 4-0 lead midway through the second half. However, William Woods would not go down without a fight.

Pete Smith took a pass from Steve Brocks and found the back of the net to cut the lead to 4-1. Cory Herchenroeder added another goal off an assist from Eric Ooton to cut the deficit to two goals. That would be as close as the Owls could get.

Missouri Baptist improves to 3-2 overall, and 1-0 in the AMC. The Spartans outshot the Owls 10-8.

William Woods falls to 2-2-1 on overall, and 0-1 in AMC play. They will return to action on Saturday, September 20th. The Owls will travel to Benedictine College and play the Ravens at 7:00 pm.

Owls William Woods Falls at Central Methodist

(FAYETTE, Mo., Sept. 13)--The William Woods University men's soccer team lost at Central Methodist University on Saturday evening. The Eagles defeated the Owls 3-0.

The two teams entered the match very familiar with each other. The two teams played in Fulton, Missouri, on August 30th, to a 3-3 double overtime tie.

The Eagles (4-1-1) took a 1-0 lead going into the half on a goal from Franso Zo Riviere. Riviere added another goal in the second half to stretch the lead to 2-0. Paulo Vaz finished the scoring for the Eagles with just under two minutes remaining in the match.

William Woods recorded eight shots in the loss. CMU recorded 13 shots in the win. Nate Thackeray (Manchester, United Kingdom) had four saves in goal for WWU. Brent Tegerdine had six saves in the win for CMU.

William Woods (2-1-1) will return to action on Tuesday, September 16th. The Owls will host Missouri Baptist University at 7:00 pm at Firley Field. The match will serve as the American Midwest Conference opener for WWU.

Steve Brocks vs Iowa Wesleyan CollegeWilliam Woods Improves to 2-0-1

(FULTON, Mo., Sept. 7th)--The William Woods University men's soccer team collected its second win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Firley field. The Owls defeated the visiting Tigers of Iowa Wesleyan College 2-0. William Woods improves to 2-0-1 on the season.

The Owls and Tigers played the first half of the match to a scoreless tie. Each team took turns pressuring the other teams defense. IWC recorded six shots in the first half of play. The Owls recorded nine shots on goal. Neither team could find the back of the net.

William Woods broke the scoreless tie in the 64th minute. Steve Brocks (Portsmouth, United Kingdom) took a cross from Greg Baker (St. Peters, Mo.) and fired a goal past the diving goalie to give the Owls the lead. It was the second goal of the season for Brocks.

The Owls continued the offensive pressure during the second half. In the 69th minute, Ricardo Ambrosini (Guayaquil, Equador) was fouled off a corner kick in the box. The foul gave Ambrosini a penalty kick. On one of the most exciting plays in soccer, Ambrosini took aim at the top left corner and recorded his second goal on the season. That goal would would prove to be the final nail in the coffin.

Iowa Wesleyan (1-3) recorded 13 shots in the loss. William Woods recorded 17 shots in the victory.

The shutout was the second this week for William Woods. The Owls defeated Culver-Stockton College 3-0 on Tuesday, September 2nd.

The Owls finished the 2007 season with a record of 2-12. With their 2-0-1 start, Coach Mason, and his team, have quickly turned things around. They will return to action on Saturday, September 13th, at Central Methodist University. The Owls opened its 2008 season with a 3-3 double-overtime tie against CMU on August 30th at Firley Field.

Pete Smith vs Culver-Stockton CollegeOwls Earn First Win

(CANTON, Mo., September 2nd)-- The William Woods University men’s soccer team earned its first win of the 2008 season with a 3-0 win at Culver-Stockton College on Tuesday. The Owls now stand at 1-0-1 on the season.

The Owls had to beat its opponents and the conditions to secure its first win of the season. With temperatures in the low 90's, and the humidity at it's breaking point, the Owls took a 1-0 lead into halftime. The half was actually halted for 30 minutes due to lightning in the area.

Junior Pete Smith (St. Louis, Mo.) scored in the 20th minute to give the Owls an early 1-0 lead. Freshman Neale Goodeve (Portsmouth, United Kingdom) was credited with an assist on the play. Ten minutes later, the game was halted by game administration as storms producing lighting passed to the north of Canton.

Following a brief halftime, the Owls went back on the offensive in the second half. Junior Steve Brocks (Portsmouth, United Kingdom) scored in the 50th minute to push the lead to 2-0. Brocks took a pass from David Fritz (Des Moines, Iowa) and scored from the left post.

The Owls continued peppering the CSC goalie until Ricardo Ambrosini (Guayaquil, Equador) scored from just inside the box to give the Owls a 3-0 lead.

William Woods outshot Culver-Stockton 19-7 on the day. Nate Thackeray (Manchester, United Kingdom) recorded three saves in goal for the Owls.

William Woods will return to action on Sunday, September 7th. The Owls will host Iowa Wesleyan College at 3:00 pm, at Firley Field.

Owls Tie EaglesWilliam Woods University Men’s Soccer Opens With a Tie

(FULTON, Mo., August 30th)--The William Woods University men’s soccer team opened its 2008 season with a 3-3 tie against visiting Central Methodist University at Firley Field in Fulton, Missouri.

New men's soccer coach Nathan Mason saw his first match stretch to two overtime periods before ending in a 3-3 tie. The match was also the first played under the new lights at Firley Field. If Saturday was any indication of night soccer on the campus of William Woods University, it will be tough to find a good seat. The overflow crowd was treated to a great college soccer match.

Central Methodist (0-1-1) took a 2-1 lead into the half on goals from Rob Humphrey (St. Louis, Mo.) and Scott Alvino (St. Louis, Mo.).  Junior Pete Smith (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the lone goal in the half for WWU.

The second half saw a flurry of activity early.  William Woods tied the game on a goal from junior Eric Ooton (Kansas City, Mo.).  The Owls took a brief 3-2 lead on a goal from freshman Neale Goodeve (Portsmouth, United Kingdom).  The Eagles quickly tied the game at three with 30 minutes remaining in the half. 

Both teams had opportunities in the first overtime. The Owls and Eagles made several runs before heading into the second overtime. The Owls controlled the ball and the tempo throughout the entire ten-minute final overtime, but could not find the back of the net. After two overtime periods, the game would end in a 3-3 tie.

William Woods (0-0-1) will return to action on Tuesday, September 2nd, at Culver-Stockton College.

Owls Set to Open 2008 Season

The William Woods University men's soccer team will begin its 2008 season on Saturday, August 30th. The Owls will host Central Methodist University at 7:00 at Firley Field.
