William Woods Wins Both American Midwest Conference and NAIA Region V Championships

Luke Heyer (SMITHVILLE LAKE, Mo., April 25)--The William Woods University men's golf team won the American Midwest Conference and the NAIA Region V Championship at the Paradise Point Golf Complex (Outlaw Course) in Smithville on Friday. William Woods defeated Lindenwood University by one stroke to win the NAIA Regional Championship and defeated McKendree University by 29 strokes to win the AMC Championship. The Owls earn an automatic bid to the NAIA National tournament. This is the first time in school history the men's golf team will advance to the NAIA National Championships.

Senior Luke Heyer (St. Louis. Mo.) came out blazing with an opening round one-under par 71 and followed that will rounds of 75 and 77 for a total of 223, Heyer won the American Midwest Conference Tournament and finished second the NAIA Region V Tournament and was named as the American Midwest Conference Player of the Year based on season long Golfstat ranking. Senior Mark Burlison (Fredricktown, Mo.) carded scores of 73,73 and 78 for a 224 total to finished second in the AMC Tournament and finished third in the NAIA Region V Tournament. Both Heyer and Burlison were named to both the NAIA All-Region Team and American Midwest Conference First Team.

"I am very proud of our team, they really hung tough down the stretch against an outstanding Lindenwood

team in brutal conditions with wind gusts to over 35 mph", said Owls Head Golf Coach Barry Doty following the round.

"It was match play the final few holes and I told Luke Heyer on #18 tee that we were either one-up, one-down or even with one hole to go and he just bombed a drive down the middle of the fairway to within 50 yards of the green. David Lawson an outstanding player for Lindenwood from Scotland blocked his tee shot into the trees and could only punch out to near where Luke's ball was in the fairway. When I reached the 18th green I was told that we were even and that this hole would decide the championship, both players hit on the green with Lawson about 25 feet from the hole and Luke about 10 feet closer. Everyone watched as Lawson's putt barely slid by the hole on the right, he would tap in for a bogey five. Luke hit a good putt to about six inches and holed it to win the championship by one stroke", Doty added.

Freshmen Austin Waibel (Boonville, Mo.) had steady rounds of 79,78 and 77 for a 234 total and finish tied for 6th place in the AMC with teammate junior Gabe George (Salisbury, Mo.) who fired rounds of 77, 72 and 85. Both Waibel and George were named to the American Midwest Conference First Team.

Sophomore Kyle Kovar (Columbia, Mo.) rounded out the scoring for the Owls with rounds of 78,83 and 79.

The Owls will travel to the Indiana National Golf Club in Plymouth, Indiana on May 10-16 to compete in their first ever NAIA Men's Golf National Championship.
