On October 18th, the William Woods University Women’s Basketball players participated in the Missouri School for the Deaf Fitness Fair. Several players spoke to MSD students about the health benefits of playing basketball and answered many questions about what it was like to be a college athlete. They also taught, with help from interpreters, skill development, drills, and fundamentals of basketball.
The students loved the athlete’s enthusiasm, charisma and character. Stephanie Burger, a four-year starter for WWU, even dressed up as the William Wood Owl (mascot). Enjoyment was had by all who attended and both students and WWU athletes learned something from it.
When we asked Amanda Workman (Chadwick, MO) what her experience was like she stated, “They didn’t let their challenges limit them, I was impressed by how well we communicate. I feel like this was a special experience.”
