There are five different core values that make up the Champions of Character program. I believe we should strive to achieve each of these values. Each one is equally critical to creating a successful team full of honest and trustworthy individuals. Servant leadership is one of the core values we strive to model here at William Woods, and especially on the Women’s basketball team.
Some aspects of servant leadership include putting the good of the group in its entirety before the benefit of ourselves individually. As servant leaders, we must become responsible for contributing and bettering the team while continuing to perform at our best and improve ourselves in the process.
While trying to become the model servant leader, we must focus primarily on helping others while simultaneously becoming a stronger leader. A servant leader not only performs good acts for their team, but also organizes events that can benefit the community. A perfect example of this would be the many different community service acts put on by the basketball team last season and prior. For |
instance, we chaperoned the YMCA dance designed to give the children a fun activity to socialize and interact outside of school. In the past, we have cleaned up trash around Fulton in order to enjoy a cleaner environment and better represent our community. These services were aimed at improving society as a whole while bringing the team closer together through service and compassion.
Last Christmas, our team purchased food and gifts for a needy family. Not only did we have to perform different leadership roles to organize the activity, but we also served one another in helping put it together. In doing so, we gave back to our community as well. Servant leadership proves to be an essential value that we must continue to work on and illustrate proudly throughout the season and for a lifetime.
