Justin Koch Former Owl Earns All-Canadian Honors

2008 graduate Justin Koch has earned 3rd team All-Canadian honors. Koch started all 48 games in league play. He hit .408 with 3 home runs and 36 RBI.

Koch was selected 1st team All-AMC his senior season at William Woods University. He was also selected by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as its National Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year for the 2008 year.

BJ UnderkoflerRegion V Announces Award Winners

(FULTON, Mo., May 14)--The NAIA Region V has announced their All-Region and Region V Scholar-Athletes awards for the 2008 season. Several William Woods student-athletes have received recognition for their accomplishments on and off the field.

BJ Underkofler has been named to the NAIA Region V First Team. Underkofler, a senior catcher from Helena, Montana, hit .322 with 47 RBI on the season. This is the second consecutive season Underkofler has been named First Team All-Region V.

(FULTON, Mo., May 5)-- The William Woods University baseball team collected several individual awards this weekend at the American Midwest Conference post-season tournament. Eight Owls were named to either the First-Team or Honorable Mention All-AMC Team.

Justin KochJustin Koch Recognized as All-American Athlete

(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., May 6)--The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) recently awarded Justin Koch, from William Woods University, with its annual All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year award - recognizing the student athletes dedication to strength training and conditioning.

This year, the NSCA awarded 239 collegiate athletes from 165 schools with this esteemed award. Koch was selected by the strength coach Robert Jones, CSCS, who said, "Justin continues the tradition of hard workers on the WWU baseball team; joining two other baseball players to earn this award in the six years. He has been a key in raising the standard of effort for a team that already had a very high standard. Each year Justin has demonstrated great dedication and work ethic. Each year Justin has improved and challenged his teammates to do the same. He is a great leader for the hardest working team at WWU. He is a pleasure to coach and mentor."

Robert Jursnick, NSCA's Executive Director adds, "The advantages of strength training and conditioning cannot be denied in collegiate athletics. These student-athletes attest to this understanding, and are to be applauded for their hard work and dedication."

The NSCA All-American Athlete of the Year Award program is in its 29th year, and is made possible by a grant from Power Systems, Inc., a Knoxville, Tennessee fitness product leader.

Luke Carver Owls Season Ends in AMC Tournament

(ST. LOUIS, Mo., May 1)--The William Woods University baseball team lost to Missouri Baptist University in the semi-finals of the American Midwest Conference post-season tournament on Thursday afternoon. The Owls dropped an 8-0 decision to the Spartans.

The loss put the Owls in the losers bracket semi-finals against McKendree University. WWU lost to McKendree 10-2.

William Woods ends the 2008 season with a record of 24-25.

Kyle ChristiansenOwls Win AMC Tournament Opener

(ST. LOUIS, Mo., April 30)--The William Woods University baseball team won their first round game in the American Midwest Conference baseball post-season tournament.  The #3 Owls defeated #2 McKendree University 4-2.

McKendree University started the scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. William Woods answered with a run in the top of the second inning to tie the game. The two teams battled into the top of the fifth inning tied.

William Woods added a run in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Starter Michael Hufty pitched well in the no-decision. Hufty worked six innings, allowed six hits, two runs, walked six and struck out one. Josh Goodin entered the game in relief in the seventh inning with the game tied at two. He worked one inning of relief, allowed one hit, no runs, walked one and struck out one.

William Woods took the lead for good in the top of the 8th inning. Cody Morrow entered the game in relief of Goodin and worked the final two innings to pick up the victory. Morrow did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out one. The Owls added an insurance run in the top of the 9th to earn the 4-2 victory.

Kyle Christiansen was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the win. Justin Koch collected two hits in the victory.

William Woods (24-23) will play top-seed Missouri Baptist University at 12:00 noon in the semi-finals. Missouri Baptist defeated Harris-Stowe 6-0 in the first game of the tournament.

Michael HuftyOwls Split with Missouri Baptist

(FULTON, Mo., April 25)--The William Woods University baseball team split an American Midwest Conference doubleheader with visiting Missouri Baptist University on Friday evening. The Owls won the opener 5-4, and lost game two 10-7 in nine innings.

The two teams played late into the evening on Friday night.  Rain forced a 6:30 start time for the Owls and Trojans.  William Woods won the opener 5-4 behind good pitching from Junior righthander Michael Hufty.  Hufty worked six innings, allowed six hits, four runs, three earned runs, walked one and struck out four.  The win takes Hufty’s record to 4-2.  Cody Morrow picked up his 6th save of the year working the final inning.  Ryan Dickerman was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI in the win.  BJ Underkofler, Kyle Christiansen, Luke Carver, and AJ Gould all collected RBI’s in the victory.

 

The Owls and Spartans decided to play a few innings of free baseball in game two which ended early Saturday morning.  The Owls held a 6-4 lead going into the to of the 7th inning before the Spartans scored two runs to tie the game.  Each team scored a run in the 8th, and then Missouri Baptist scored 3 runs in the top of the ninth to pick up the 10-7 win.  Josh Goodin pitched well in the no-decision for William Woods.  He worked 6 innings, allowed 7 hits, 6 runs, 3 earned runs, walked one and struck out 8.  Curt Clark took the loss out of the bullpen for the Owls.  Clark falls to 3-2 on the year.  Justin Koch was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI in the loss.  Kyle Christiansen was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI as well.

William Woods is now 23-21 overall and 11-7 in the AMC. Missouri Baptist is now 32-14 overall and 14-4 in the AMC. The two teams will conclude their four-game series on Saturday at 4:00 PM. Saturday is Senior Day at Owls Field.

Justin KochOwls Lose to William Jewell

(April 22nd)--The William Woods University baseball team dropped mid-week game to visiting William Jewell on Tuesday evening. The Owls lost 6-4 and fall to 22-20 on the season.

The Cardinals scored three runs in the top of the first, and added another run in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. William Woods cut into the deficit with a three run fourth inning.

William Jewell answered the Owl rally with two runs in the top of the fifth to expand their lead.

Kyle Proebsting took the loss for the Owls. He worked 6 and 2/3 innings, allowed eight hits, six runs, four earned runs, walked two and struck out four. Justin Koch and Kyle Christiansen each collected two hits in the loss.

The Owls will return to action on Friday and Saturday, April 25th and 26th, against Missouri Baptist University. Both days will start at 1:00 PM.

Kyle ChristiansenOwls Lose at Mizzou

(COLUMBIA, Mo., April 16)--The William Woods University baseball team lost at #6 University of Missouri on Wednesday evening. The Owls entered the evening riding an eight game winning streak. That streak came to an end with a 16-9 loss.

The Owls offense set the tone early in the contest. William Woods took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning on RBI's from AJ Gould, Brian Bishop and Cody Morrow.

William Woods added two additional runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. BJ Underkofler and Kyle Christiansen each drove in a run in the inning.

After Missouri cut into the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, William Woods answered with two of their own in the top of the fifth. Christiansen hit a two-run home run to give the Owls 7-3 advantage.

The Tigers continued to chip away at the lead. They scored one run in the bottom of the fifth and used a four-run sixth inning to pull ahead 8-7. Missouri would add three runs in the seventh and five in the eight. William Woods added to runs in the top of the ninth.

Christiansen went 4-for-5 with three RBI for William Woods. Luke Carver went 3-for-5 in the loss. Shawn Neubauer (1-3) took the loss for the Owls.

William Woods falls to 21-16 on the season. They will return to action on Friday and Saturday, April 18th and 19th, at Harris-Stowe State University.

BJ UnderkoflerOwls Complete Sweep of Hannibal-LaGrange

(FULTON, Mo., April 15)--The William Woods University baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Hannibal-LaGrange College on Tuesday evening in Fulton, Missouri. The Owls won 12-2 and 10-5.

The Owls used a six-run second inning to take an early lead over Hannibal-LaGrange. Brian Bishop delivered a two-RBI single to give the Owls the lead for good. Bishop drove in BJ Underkofler and Kyle Christiansen. Justin Koch followed later in the inning with a two-RBI single of his own.

The Owls added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Owls received RBI's from Bishop, and Craig Moffett.

Moffett was 1-for-2 with three RBI in the victory. Underkofler was 2-for-4.

Michael Hufty improved to 2-2 on the season for William Woods. Hufty worked six innings, allowed six hits, two runs, two earned runs, walked two and struck out five.

The Owls were held hitless through three innings in game two. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Owls struck for five runs. Underkofler drove in two runs on an RBI double to give the Owls the lead. Jacob Thames connected with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to two runs. Cody Morrow delivered an RBI double and eventually scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 5-1.

William Woods added two runs in the fifth and three more in the six to run away with the victory. Underkofler was 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI in the win.

William Woods improves to 21-15 overall and 9-3 in the AMC. The Owls are now in a tie with Missouri Baptist University for first place in the AMC. The Owls will return to action on Wednesday, April 16th, at NCAA division I University of Missouri. The single nine-inning game will begin at 6:30 PM, CST.

Justin KochAmerican Midwest Conference Announces Baseball Player/Pitcher of the Week(LEBANON, Ill., April 15)--The American Midwest Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 14 have been announced by the league office.

Justin Koch of William Woods University has been selected as the AMC Player of the Week,while Matt Murray of Missouri Baptist University is the AMC Pitcher of the Week honoree. In addition to his AMC honor, Koch was also named the NAIA Region V Baseball Player of the Week.

Koch, a senior second baseman from Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, was on fire in an AMC doubleheader against Hannibal-LaGrange College. Koch went 6-for-7 at the plate with two doubles,one home run and four runs batted in. He also scored four times as the Owls swept a pivotal AMC twinbill from the Trojans.

For the season, Koch is hitting .398 with 20 RBI.

Justin KochOwls Take Two From Hannibal-LaGrange

(FULTON, Mo., April 11)--The William Woods University baseball team swept an American Midwest Conference doubleheader from visiting Hannibal-LaGrange College on Friday afternoon. The Owls won 10-2 and 14-4.

The Owls were solid on the mound and at the plate on Friday. In game one, Josh Goodin (5-3) worked five innings to collect the victory. Goodin allowed three hits, one run, walked four and struck out eight. Shawn Neubauer worked the final two innings for the Owls. He allowed two hits, one run and struck out one.

The Owls scored two runs in the second inning, three in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the sixth inning to cruise to the 10-2 win. Luke Carver went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run for the Owls. AJ Gould went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and a home run. B.J. Underkofler collected two hits and two RBI in the victory.

The second game looked very similar to game one for William Woods. Rod Ratliff (3-3) earned the complete game victory. He worked five innings, allowed five hits, four runs, walked three and struck out seven. Justin Koch was the offensive star for the Owls. Koch went 4-for-4 with four RBI, a double and a home run. Koch went 6-for-7 on the day with four RBI.

William Woods improves to 19-15 overall and 7-3 in the AMC. Hannibal-LaGrange falls to 20-14 overall and 3-5 in the AMC.

The Owls and Trojans will complete their four-game series on Saturday. Game one will begin at 1:00 PM, CST.

Luke Carver named as WWU Student-Athlete of the Month for March

Luke Carver (Fulton, Mo., April 5) -- Senior Baseball player Luke Carver (Jefferson City, Mo.) has been named as William Woods University Student-Athlete of the Month for March.

Carver has been outstanding this spring leading the Owls in many offensive categories, including Batting Average .381, Hits (40), Triples (4), Home Runs (3), RBI's (35), Total Bases (68) and Slugging Percentage (.648). An infielder Carver has only committed one error all season.

He was named American Midwest Conference Player of the Week for (March 24), and was a 2007 AMC Honorable Mention selection.

Carver is the son of Mike and Theresa Carver and is majoring in Sports Management

Will SchulteOwls Complete Sweep of Williams Baptist

(FULTON, Mo., April 5)--The William Woods University baseball team completed a four-game American Midwest Conference sweep of Williams Baptist College with a 7-3 and 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Owls erupted with six runs of starter Josh Mitchell.

Luke Carver delivered a big two-run home run to tie the game at three. Kyle Christian came on to pinch-hit with the bases loaded and drove in the winning run on a ground-out. The Owls would add three more runs on RBI's from Ryan Dickerman, and Justin Koch.

Will Schulte (3-1) earned the complete game victory for the Owls. Schulte went seven innings, allowed six hits, three runs, walked three and struck-out five. Koch was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

The Owls and Eagles were tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning in game two. Late inning heroics was the theme of the day for William Woods; the Owls scored three in the fifth to take the lead for good.

Koch delivered an RBI single scoring Dickerman to give the Owls a 2-1 lead. Following a wild pitch, and a walk to load the bases, BJ Underkofler hit a line-drive up the middle to score Craig Moffett and Koch.

Josh Goodin (4-3) threw another complete game for the Owls. He allowed five hits and one run over five innings. Goodin walked one and struck out nine in the win. Dickerman was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Underkofler was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

William Woods improves to 17-15 on the season, and 5-3 in the AMC. They will return to action on Tuesday at Culver-Stockton College.

Cody MorrowOwls Sweep Williams Baptist

(FULTON, Mo., April 4)--The William Woods University baseball team swept an American Midwest Conference doubleheader from visiting William Baptist College on Friday afternoon. The Owls won 5-3 and 2-1.

Williams Baptist took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning in game one. The Owls pushed two runs across on an Justin Koch RBI double, and a RBI ground-out by Jacob Thames. Both teams were held scoreless until the fifth inning.

In the fifth, WWU struck for three runs of starter Matt Dillon. With base runners on the corners, Luke Carver hit into a double-play, scoring Craig Moffett to tie the game. Thames reached on a walk, moved to third on a double by Kyle Christiansen, and then scored on a passed ball to give the Owls a 4-3 lead. B.J. Underkofler hit a RBI double, scoring Christiansen, to give the Owls a 5-3 lead.

Curt Clark (3-0) picked up the win for William Woods. He worked 5 and 1/3 innings. Clark allowed six hits, 3 runs (all unearned), walked two and struck out five. Cody Morrow worked the final inning and 2/3 to pick up his fourth save of the year.

It was another strong pitching duel in game two. William Woods scored two runs of starter David Reynolds in the bottom of the first inning. Carver hit a sacrifice fly to score Ryan Dickerman to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. Underkofler reached on a fielders choice, scoring Moffett to give the Owls the final run they would score.

Rod Ratliff (2-3) threw six innings to pick up the win. He allowed one run on three hits, walked five and struck out ten Eagles. Morrow earned his fifth save of the year, and second of the day. Morrow worked one inning. He did not surrender a hit, walked one and struck out one.

The Owls (15-15, 3-3) and Eagles (11-19, 2-2) will conclude their four-game series tomorrow. First-pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.

Craig MoffettOwls Drop Two at McKendree

(LEBANON, Ill., April 3)--The William Woods University baseball team drop an American Midwest Conference doubleheader at McKendree University. The Owls lost 2-12 and 2-6.

McKendree struck for three runs in the bottom of the first, and two more in the bottom of the second to take a 5-0 lead. Shawn Neubauer took the loss for the Owls. He gave up eight runs on ten hits in three and 2/3 innings. Neubauer falls to 1-2 on the year.

Craig Moffett collected two of the five hits for William Woods. He also drove in a run in the loss.

The Bearcats held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the six inning of game two. McKendree would push four runs across the plate to increase their lead to five. William Woods added a run in the top of the seventh inning, but their rally would fall short.

Michael Hufty (1-2) took the loss for the Owls. He allowed three runs on seven hits in five and 1/3 innings of work. Moffett went 1-for-3 in the loss.

The Owls fall to 13-15 on the season, and 1-3 in the AMC. William Woods will return to action on Friday and Saturday, April 4th and 5th. The Owls will host Williams Baptist College in a four-game AMC series. Both doubleheaders will begin at 1:00 PM.

Owls Fall to CMU

(FULTON, Mo., April 1)--Central Methodist University stuck for three runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat William Woods on Tuesday afternoon at Owl Field. The Eagles defeated the Owls 8-6.

William Woods scored a run in the first inning and in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. CMU answered with three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead.

The Owls pushed two runs across in the bottom of the fourth inning. Craig Moffett scored on a passed ball to tie the game at three. BJ Underkofler grounded out, scoring Ryan Dickerman to give the Owls a 4-3 lead.

CMU answered in the top of the fifth. Jay Paxton singled in Steve King to tie the game. Not to be outdone, the Owls answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Jacob Thames doubled to start the inning. A.J. Gould followed with a double, driving in Thames. The Owls would strand Gould, but take a 5-4 lead.

The Owls added a run in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead the 6-4. Central Methodist cut the lead to one run in the top of the eight inning on a sacrifice fly by Tim Vinson, scoring Paxton.

Cody Morrow took the mound for William Woods in the top of the ninth leading 6-5. Morrow struck out Michael McClain to start the inning, then got Sean Groff to grounded out to record two quick outs. Morrow then walked three straight Eagles to load the bases. John Piatt step to the plate and delivered a three-RBI double to give the Eagles an 8-6 lead.

The Owls rallied in the bottom of the ninth, but stranded runners on second and third as Ryan Dickerman grounded out to end the threat, and the game.

Austin Pogue picked up the win in relief for Central Methodist. Pogue worked 2 and 1/3 innings, allowed six hits, one run, and struck out one. Cody Morrow (0-3) took the loss for William Woods.

Luke Carver and Kyle Christiansen went 3-for-5 in the loss. Craig Moffett also recorded three hits in the loss.

William Woods falls to 13-13 on the season. Central Methodist improves to 8-17 on the year.

The Owls will conclude their four-game AMC series with McKendree University on Wednesday. The Owls will travel to Lebanon, Illinois and play the Bearcats at 1:00 PM.

Owls Split at McKendree

(LEBANON, Ill., March 30)--The William Woods University baseball team split their American Midwest Conference doubleheader at McKendree University on Saturday afternoon.  The Owls lost the opener 6-3, and won the second game 2-0.

The Owls held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning in the opener.  McKendree began their rally with one run in the bottom of the fourth, two runs in the fifth, and two more in the sixth.

Josh Goodin took the loss in relief for the Owls.  Goodin worked four innings, allowed three runs, four hits, walked seven and struck out four.

AJ Gould went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.   The Owls managed three runs on five hits off Bearcats starter Cale Johnson.

The Owls received a big pitching performance in the second game of the doubleheader.  Shawn Neubauer threw a complete game shutout to pick up the win.  Neubauer allowed only two hits, walked one and struck out six Bearcats in the win.

William Woods received RBI’s from BJ Underkofler and Ryan Dickerman in the sixth inning.  Dickerman was 1-for-3 with a run scored in the win.

William Woods improves to 13-12 on the season, and 1-1 in the AMC.  They will return to action on Tuesday, April 1st, versus Central Methodist University.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM, CST.

Luke CarverCarver Selected American Midwest Conference and NAIA Region V Player of the Week

Wednesday, March 26th

Luke Carver of William Woods University has been named the American Midwest Conference and NAIA Region V Player of the Week for March 24.

Carver, a senior first baseman from Jefferson City, Mo., batted .571 in six games last week for the Owls. He went 12-for-21 at the plate with four doubles and two triples along with four runs scored. Carver also drove in seven runs and was 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts for the week. Thanks in part to Carver's efforts, William Woods has surged above the .500 mark on the season at 12-11.

Owls Drop Two to Houston-Victoria

(BROWNSVILLE, Tex., March 19)--The William Woods University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the University of Houston-Victoria on Tuesday evening. The Owls lost 22-8 and 15-5.

UHV scored five runs in the top of the third inning to break a 3-3 tie. The Jaguars added six in the fourth and eight in the sixth to secure the win. Josh Goodin (3-2) took the loss for the Owls. A.J. Gould went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.

The Owls had a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning in game two before the Jaguars erupted for eight runs. UHV added six runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to complete the sweep. Michael Hufty (1-1) took the loss for the Owls. Stephen Thoenen went 2-for-2 with an RBI in the loss.

William Woods (10-9) will return to action on Wednesday, March 19th, versus Fisher College.

Michael Hufty Hufty Earns AMC Pitcher of the Week Honor

(LEBANON, Ill., March 18)--Michael Hufty of William Woods University has been selected as the American Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week for March 17.

Hufty, a junior from Silex, Mo., led William Woods to victory in the team's only game of the week, a 5-1 decision over Missouri Valley College. In five innings of work, Hufty allowed just two hits with one unearned run and six strikeouts. The win was the first of 2008 for Hufty, who won AMC Freshman of the Year honors two years ago.

Owls Top Missouri Valley

Michael Hufty(FULTON, Mo., Mar 13)--The William Woods University baseball team defeated visiting Missouri Valley College 5-1 on Thursday evening. The game was called in the bottom of the 5th inning due to rain. Game two was cancelled.

As was the case on Tuesday against Missouri University S&T, the William Woods Owls used some late heroics to defeat Missouri Valley on Thursday. MVC held a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning against the Owls. William Woods struck for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.

Luke Carver singled in Justin Koch to tie the game at one. AJ Gould would later double in Carver and BJ Underkofler to push the lead to two runs. Brian Bishop added some insurance with and RBI single scoring Gould.

After holding Missouri Valley scoreless in the top of the fifth inning, the rain began to fall. After a rain delay that lasted two hours, the game was called.

Michael Hufty (1-0) earned his first win of the season. Hufty worked five innings, allowed two hits, struck out six, and walked one.

William Woods improves to 9-6 on the season.

Late Rally Lifts Owls

Ryan Dickerman(FULTON, Mo., Mar. 11)--The William Woods University baseball team scored 10 runs over the last two innings to defeat visiting Missouri University S&T Tuesday afternoon. The win takes the Owls to 8-6 overall.

MU S&T jumped on WWU starter Shawn Neubauer with a four-run third inning to take an early 5-0 lead. Will Schulte entered the game in relief and worked the next four innings for William Woods. The Miners would get to Schulte in the seventh inning, scoring four runs.

MU S&T had a 9-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before the Owls erupted.  Ryan Dickerman hit a one-out grand slam to cut the lead to 9-5 in the seventh inning. 

Jon Seibel worked an inning and 1/3 of one-hit baseball to keep the Owls in the game. Dickerman delivered in the clutch again with an RBI Double in the eighth to tie the game at nine.  Justin Koch followed up the Dickerman double with an RBI single to give the Owls the lead. B.J. Underkofler added an RBI single to push the lead to two.

Cody Morrow worked a perfect ninth for his second save of the season. Seibel picked up his first win of the year.

Dickerman went 2-for-5 with five RBI in the win. Craig Moffett went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the winning effort.

Mark Lupkey took loss for MU S&T. The Miners are now 5-6 on the season.

William Woods will return to action on Thursday. The Owls will host Missouri Valley College. The first pitch of the doubleheader will begin at 6:00 PM.

Owls Drop Two at Avila

(KANSAS CITY, Mo., Mar. 9th)--The William Woods University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Avila University on Sunday afternoon. The Owls lost 2-0 and 6-1.

Avila University hit a 2-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull off the 2-0 victory in game one. Josh Goodin (3-1) was the tough-luck loser for the Owls. He worked 8 and 2/3 innings, struck out five, walked two, surrendered six hits and two runs.

William Woods had several opportunities to win the opener. The Owls stranded eight baserunners in the loss. Justin Kock went 2-for-3 for WWU.

Avila jumped on starter Rod Ratliff in the first inning of game two. Avila scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. That would prove to be all the run support the Avila staff would need. William Woods pushed across one run in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-1, however, Avila answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.

Ratliff (1-2) took the loss for the Owls. Luke Carver went 2-for-4 in the loss.

William Woods is now 7-6 on the young season. They will host the University of Missouri-Rolla on Tuesday afternoon in a nine-inning game. First pitch is at 3:00 PM.

B.J. Underkofler Named February WWU Student-Athlete of the Month

B.J. Underkofler(Fulton, Mo., March 3) -- Senior Baseball player B.J. Underkofler has been named as WWU Student-Athlete of the Month for February. Underkofler has helped lead the Owls to a 7-4 record by batting .410

with an incredible Slugging Percentage of .846.

The Helena, Montana product also leads the Owls in Hits (16), Doubles (9), Extra Base Hits (12) and Total Bases (33) while maintaining a 100% Fielding Percentage behind the plate.

Underkofler was a 2007 All-AMC and All-Region selection as well as being named as a Rawlings Gold Glove recipient for both the AMC and Region V.

B.J. is an outstanding student majoring in Sports Management.

William Woods Drops 3 of 4 in Texas

Kyle Proebsting(FORT WORTH, Tex., Feb. 24)--The William Woods University baseball team dropped 3 of 4 games in Forth Worth, Texas, over the weekend. The Owls are now 5-4 overall.

William Woods lost both ends of a doubleheader at #18 Texas Wesleyan University on Saturday. The Owls dropped game one 5-3 and game two 6-5 (10 innings).

Cody Morrow (0-1) took the loss in game one of the doubleheader. Morrow entered the game in relief of starting pitcher Josh Goodin. Texas Wesleyan scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie. B.J. Underkofler went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the loss.

The Owls and Rams went extra innings in game two. The Owls took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Rams drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game at five. Texas Wesleyan pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning. Will Schulte (0-1) took the loss for the Owls. Luke Carver went 1-for-5 with a 3-run home run.

William Woods took on #8 Cumberland University on Sunday. The two teams played their seven-inning game at Texas Wesleyan University. Cumberland jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings. They would tack on five more runs in the fifth. Rod Ratliff (1-1) took the loss for the Owls. Craig Moffett went 2-for-3 for William Woods.

The Owls ended their Texas trip with a victory over Texas Wesleyan University on Sunday. The Owls defeated the Rams 7-5. Kyle Proebsting (1-0) went six innings to pick up the win. Brian Bishop went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Owls Take Series at Christian Brothers

Josh Gooding(Memphis, Tenn., Feb. 17)--The William Woods University baseball team took two of three games from NCAA Division II opponent Christian Brothers University this weekend.  The Owls won game one 5-0, game two 9-5, and lost game three 9-10.

On Saturday, Josh Goodin improved to 2-0 with a strong performance on the mound for the Owls in game one.  Goodin worked seven innings.  He allowed four hits, no runs, struck out seven, and walked two.

William Woods scored one run in the top of fourth on a sacrifice fly from Brian Bishop.  That run would prove to be all the scoring the Owls would need.

The Owls added two runs in the 7th, and two more in the 9th to preserve the victory.  Cody Morrow worked two innings of scoreless relief to earn his first save of the year.

Ryan Dickerman, B.J. Underkofler, and A.J. Gould each had two hits apiece for the Owls.  Luke Carver and Kyle Christiansen collected two RBI each in the win.

Game two of the three-game series began on Saturday.  It was suspended in the top of the 4th inning and completed on Sunday.

The Owls had a 3-0 lead before the rain came on Saturday.  Mike Bultitude worked three innings of one-hit baseball.  He struck out two, walked two, and did not surrender a run.  Luke Carver launched a two-run homer in the third inning to give the Owls their 3-0 lead.

Kyle Proebsting took the mound for the Owls on Sunday when the game resumed.  However, Will Schulte would pick up the win.  Schulte worked the final inning and two-thirds.  He did not allow a run while picking up his first win of the year.

B.J. UnderkoflerChristian Brothers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The Bus scored four runs off Proebsting to even the game going into the final inning.  The Owls then answered with four runs of their own in the top of the seventh inning.  B.J. Underkofler doubled to center field with the bases loaded to give the Owls all the cushion they would need.  Underkofler went 2-for-4 in the game with four RBI.  A.J. Gould also went 2-for-4 in the victory.  Gould drove in three runs for the Owls.

William Woods could not complete the sweep of Christian Brothers in game three.  CBU took a 6-2 lead after two innings, and held on to win 10-9.

Shawn Neubauer took the loss in relief for the Owls.  Neubauer falls to 0-1 on the year.

William Woods tied the game at eight in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Ryan Dickerman.  CBU answered with two runs off Neubauer to give the Bucs a 10-8 lead.

Dickerman went 4-for-5 with two RBI in the loss for the Owls.  Carver and Underkofler each had two hits in the loss.

William Woods (4-1) will return to action on Saturday, February 23rd, at Texas Wesleyan University.  The Owls will play four games in Fort Worth, Texas.

Owls Start Season 2-0 (Feb. 9)

Josh Goodin vs Doane(FULTON, Mo., Feb. 9)--The William Woods University baseball team opened the 2008 season with a two-game sweep of visiting Doane College (Nebraska). The Owls won game one 11-1 and game two 10-0.

The Owls jumped on the Tigers in game one. Ryan Dickerman reached on an outfield error to start the inning. Justin Koch followed the error with a walk. Nick Signaigo put the Owls on the board with an RBI single. William Woods put up two runs in the opening frame to take control from the start.

The Owls put up five more runs in the second, and one more in the third on a solo homerun by AJ Gould to run their lead to 8-0.

Josh Goodin was dominant in his first start of the season. Goodin pitched five innings, allowed five hits, one earned run, walked one and struck out 10.

Justin Koch went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the victory. AJ Gould collected two hits for the Owls.

Rod Ratliff

The Owls received another dominating pitching performance in game two from Rod Ratliff. Ratliff went five innings to pick up the victory. He allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out six.

BJ Underkofler had an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning to give the Owls an early lead. Woods tacked on two in the third, three in the fourth, and three in the fifth inning en route to a 9-0 lead. Underkofler's RBI triple scored Kip Bayte to end the game by the 10-run rule.

William Woods (2-0) will return to action on Sunday, February 10th, against Doane College. The two teams will play a double header beginning at 12:00 noon.
