The Ivy Tradition
While the actual history of the William Woods University Ivy Chain remains a mystery, tradition states that early senior classes first planted ivy on campus during a special graduation program. Since that time, the planting ceremony has evolved to ivy chain processionals…one in the fall for entering students and one in the spring for graduating seniors.
We extend to our students the challenge of the ivy. Participation in the ivy ceremonies will bond incoming students to the traditions held firm in the hearts of all William Woods University alumni.

As the ivy entwines itself, so their lives are entwined with the lives of those around them. Every person on the William Woods campus is inextricably linked by the ivy bond which symbolizes the development of friendships, goals and common purposes.
Students are challenged to achieve – to be the best that they can be. Their capacity for academic growth and advancement will be infinitely boundless. During students’ careers, they will have an opportunity to seize hold of their lives, expand their horizons and succeed.
The ties that bind will continue throughout their university days, only to be broken at graduation when the ivy chain is severed. At that time, new alumni embark on the next phase of life as an alumnus and of William Woods University.
