Incoming Freshman Scholarships and Awards

Whether you are a scholar, a legacy, an actor or an athlete (or all of the above!), William Woods University has freshmen scholarships for just about every passion and excellence. Read about our various scholarships below — some are awarded automatically upon acceptance and some require an application. Please, do not hesitate to give us a call with any questions you may have.

Lead Award

Increase your scholarship with the LEAD Award of $5,000 for residential students and $2,500 for commuter students per year!

Athletic Awards

Requirement
Awards are available for basketball, baseball, cross country, track and field, golf, soccer, softball, tennis and women’s volleyball. Coaches determine recipients of these awards based on demonstrated talent and skill. All athletes are required to participate in the  LEAD program, in addition athletes are eligiable for Honors Program, A+ Award and Legacy Award.

Scholar-Athlete Awards

Requirement
Students who are awarded an athletic scholarship may also receive this award if ACT is at least 26.

Performance Scholarships

Specific criteria – such as an interview, portfolio, essay, etc. must be submitted for consideration of these awards.

These scholarships are awarded from the applicable academic areas. 

 

American Sign Language Interpreting

Up to $5,000

Requirement

  • Full-time enrollment, must be a declared major within the applicable award 
  • Two letters of recommendation from non-family members
  • 300-word essay on why you want to become an ASL/English interpreter
  • Audition videos showing you interpreting a story and a song ( View video criteria)
  • Must remain within the declared applicable major to be eligible for renewal 

 

Communications

Requirement

  • Full-time enrollment, must be a declared major within the applicable award 
  • Interview with a member of the communications faculty
  • 300-word essay on the impact that ______ has on society, (fill in the blank with your specific area of interest in communications. For example, "The impact that broadcasting has on society.")
  • Must remain within the declared applicable major to be  eligible for renewal 

 

Equestrian Science

Requirement

  • Full-time enrollment, must be a declared major within the applicable award 
  • Equestrian Science major (Equine Administration and Equine General Studies are not eligible)
  • Video showing your equestrian riding skills (View video criteria and uploading instructions)
  • Must remain within the declared applicable major to be  eligible for renewal 

 

Art Education, Graphic Design or Studio Arts

Requirement

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Full-time enrollment, must be a declared major within the applicable award 
  • Portfolio review, showing design skills, drawing skills and media exploration
  • Interview with a member of the art faculty
  • Must remain within the declared applicable major to be  eligible for renewal 

 

Theatre and Theatre Education

  • Full-time enrollment, must be a declared major within the applicable award

This award is given to every student who commits to becoming involved on campus by attending lectures, films, concerts, intercollegiate athletic events, plays, etc. Learn more »

An annual accumulation of 45 points (resident) or 28 points (commuter) is required for renewal. 

 

A+ Award

Requirement
Automatically awarded to students from a Missouri A+ designated school who successfully complete the requirements of the program and submit final transcript reflecting the designation. 

 

Legacy Award

Automatically awarded to incoming students with a grandparent, parent or sibling who attended WWU or is currently enrolled.

Missouri Boys/Girls State Participant Award Application

Awarded to freshmen who have participated in Missouri Boys/Girls Statewith a minimum ACT score of 23 or SAT of 1050 (critical reading and math only).

Must be a son or daughter of William Woods alumnus who lives in Callaway County, a relative of any William Woods alumnus, or a Callaway County resident of at least 2 years. Must have minimum high school QPA of 2.5.

Parent must be an ordained Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) minister with good standing in the church. Ministers must be recognized as ordained ministers by the Disciples of Christ organization.
