The 2008 William Woods Summer Riding Program is actually two separate sessions. Each session will be a comprehensive horse experience for riders of all ability levels. Participants select the session that corresponds to their age:
- Session I July 5 – 10 Riders 14 – 17 years of age
- Session II July 12 – 17 Riders 10 – 13 years of age
Hunt seat, saddle seat and western riding lessons are offered. There will be beginning through advanced riders participating both weeks. Participants select the seat that they wish to ride.
Participants will ride once or twice a day through-out their session. All riders, regardless of experience or seat, will ride the same number of times. Riding groups will be established according to the participants’ experience. The horses to be used belong to William Woods University.
All of the school horses are gifts or donations to the university. Breeds represented include the American Quarter Horse, the American Saddlebred, Appaloosa, Arabian, Morgan, Thoroughbred and various Warmbloods. Each animal has its own tack and grooming equipment. You may choose to bring your own saddle. You do not bring your own horse.
Along with riding, a variety of other equestrian subjects will be covered including, conformation, health care, unsoundnesses, handling and show grooming. Off-campus trips may be planned. Riding lessons will be in small groups, with students of similar experience. Participants will be exposed to areas of the horse world outside of their concentration. The William Woods Summer Riding Program promises learning opportunities designed to develop a versatile and open-minded equestrian.
