PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

Based on Missouri Subject-Specific Competencies for New Teachers

Upon completing this program, students will be able to do the following:

1. Use standard spoken and written English.
2. Apply a variety of strategies to comprehend, interpret, and evaluate diverse texts, including, but not limited to, prior experiences, interactions with other readers and writers, knowledge of word meaning, word identification strategies and understanding of textual features.
3. Participate in---developing, leading and listening to----presentations and discussion for a variety of purposes and audiences.
4. Identify diversity in language use and dialects.
5. Use texts and prior experiences to generate ideas, to develop questions, to pose problems, and to formulate solutions.
6. Gather, evaluate, and synthesize information using a variety of technological and informational resources to create and communicate knowledge effectively.
7. Identify developmental stages of language acquisition.
8. Understand the history and the dynamic nature of the English language.
9. Employ a variety of writing strategies and writing process elements to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
10. Build an understanding of the many dimensions of human experience by reading a variety of literature from different periods, genres, and cultures.
11. Read, view, and create a variety of texts to respond to the evolving needs and demands of society, the workplace and the individual.
