Senior Comments about Field Practicum

NICKI KNIGHTNicki

Where are you doing you internship?

I am doing my internship at Missouri Girls Town (MGT). A residential treatment facility for girls from ages 8-21.

Why did you choose this agency/organizations?

I chose this agency because I was interested in working with girls in this age group.  I also felt really comfortable at the agency when I cam for my interview.  I felt it was a place that I could be comfortable in,  learn a lot, and enjoy working with my clientele.

What do you do at your internship?
I do a lot  of things at my internship.  Right now, mostly I shadow my supervisor in counseling sessions and groups.  I also work on treatment planning, sit in on training, and read client files.

What do you like most about your internship?
I love being able to put to use skills I've learned in class in a practice setting and watching other, more experienced social workers use those same skills and new ones too. I also love learning about the girls and how they have and continue to progress in their treatment.

What is the most important thing you have learned about yourself since you began your field placement?

The most important thing I have learned is that you may not feel nervous and unsure sometimes, but you just have to give things a try and more times than not you are more prepared than you thought you were.  You have to always remind yourself that it may seem scary at first, but after you do it you feel like you've really done something productive and you have learned more than you can even more than you did in your years in the classroom.

The coalition Against Rape and Domestic Violence

Why did you choose this agency/organizations?

I choose this agency because when I went to check out the different agencies this felt the most comfortable for me when I wasn't sure what I wanted to do.

What do you do at your internship?

Now I think I'm becoming interested in advocacy and victimization.

What do you like most about your internship?

I will get to work with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. So far what I like about internship is the support and resources available to clients that the agency provides.

What is the most important thing you have learned about yourself since you began your field placement?

The most important thing I've learned about myself is that I really want to make a difference in people's lives and within the community to make changes for the better.

Where are you doing you internship?

I'm doing my internship at Missouri Cancer Associates in Columbia, MO.

Why did you choose this agency/organizations?

I had previously worked there and am very interested in working with oncology patients.

What do you do at your internship?

A task that takes up most of my time is linking people to resources throughout the community and also with cancer foundations who can sometimes provide patients with financial assistance.

What do you like most about your internship?

Applying things that I have been learning in class and actually using them, not just taking the textbooks word for it.

What is the most important thing you have learned about yourself since you began your field placement?

Patience is a virtue, and their are only so many hours in a day.

Where are you doing you internship?

Fulton Treatment Center

Why did you choose this agency/organizations?

I chose to do my internship at Fulton Treatment Center because I am interested in learning more about juvenile delinquency, juvenile justice, and about what treatment is available through DYS.  I am interested in working with adolescents in the future and feel that I will gain the proper experience at FTC.

What do you do at your internship?

At FTC am able to participate and observe several different aspects of residential treatment for boys ages 12-17.  Residents participate in group meetings, a variety of treatment circles, substance abuse sessions, optional bible study, and several recreational activities.

What do you like most about your internship?

I enjoy learning about different treatment methods and being able to see the positive effects that they have on the residents.

What is the most important thing you have learned about yourself since you began your field placement?

During my field placement I have realized my appreciation for the positive progress that the boys make on a daily basis.

Where are you doing you internship?
Rosa Parks Center: A residential home for female juvenile offenders.

Why did you choose this agency/organizations?
I visited the agency my freshmen year with my Interviewing and Agency Analysis Class...I loved it so much that I stayed to volunteer and sort of mentor the girls there. My passion is juvenile offenders (specifically females) because I feel that they there are better things to do with them than throw them in jail. RPC believes that also.

What do you do at your internship?
Right now? :) A lot of observing. I'm still learning about the rules the girls have to follow, what the staffs role is, what MY role is and much much more. Also, I am learning about hte girls and building relationships with them.

What do you like most about your internship?
The girls! They are so funny and I love being around them...even when they are angry and being hard. It is so cool to walk in and hear "Jess! You're here!"

What is the most important thing you have learned about yourself since you began your field placement?
I think the most important thing I've learned so far is that I am in the right field. It just feels right to be in social work, working with these girls and seeing them succeed and take huge steps toward succcess.
