Silent Weekend

One weekend in the spring semester of each year all of the American Sign Language/Interpreting Program students go on a weekend retreat at Rickman Center near Jefferson City. What is special about this weekend is that it is a weekend of total silence. The only mode of communication is sign language.

The group arrives on Friday and the silence begins. Upon arrival the students take a "Pledge of Silence." Deaf instructors and group leaders conduct mini-workshops for the students. The group plays games, performs skits, and enjoys playing different games, socializing and other outdoor activities.

Many students have expressed that their experience with Silent Weekend a very special memory. It is an ASL skill-enhancing weekend, and most of all a special time to spend with your classmates in all levels.

The next Silent Weekend will be held on April 4-5, 2008.
