My ASL Philosophy
American Sign Language (ASL) is an incredible language and is proven itself as a true language for Deaf people to use everyday. It is very artistic and beautiful. Many people, including hearing people, find it amazing. I thank myself for knowing ASL. It’s so beautiful that I want make it spread out to everyone everyday. Music, to me, is felt by drums and visualized by lights. ASL also has many "accents" or different styles that many Deaf people find intriguing and challenging at the same time.
Deaf culture is very different from hearing culture. We live in our culture naturally - we always feel liked among other Deaf people. In fact, most Deaf communities are like one big family.
Deaf people communicate very well through ASL. Many people will agree with the fact that communication is one of the most important characteristics of a community of people so that they can find the truth about themselves. I have found the truth about myself.
My grandmother once told me how my family came to decide to send me to a Deaf school: I came home one day from head start, and at only three years old, I had learned to fingerspell my name. I ran up to my grandfather to show him, and everyone saw how happy I was that I could communicate with my hands. That was a deciding factor in sending me to Deaf school. Eventually I became fluent in ASL, and now I LOVE IT!
That is why I am here. Since I love ASL, I enjoy teaching students in ASL! I want them to find ASL so irresistible that they want to learn more and more. Plus, by learning ASL, they open up the doors for communication with Deaf people.
