WWU Visual Arts, Performing Arts & Communications Award Information

Visual Arts Award Criteria (Studio Art, Graphic Design, Art Education):

Basis for Award:

Intended major in Studio Art, Graphic Design or Art Education.
Academic achievement, demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
Full-time enrollment is required.
Awards are giving on the basis of academic achievement, talent and potential.

Two categories of awards are available:
Incentive Award - $1,000 to $2,000
Performance Awards - $3,000 to $5,000

Term of the Award:
One academic year (see renewal requirements below).

Application Procedures:

Apply for admission and be accepted for enrollment to William Woods University.
Complete and submit the William Woods University Scholarship and Award Application.
Portfolio review by regular Art Faculty Member(s). Portfolio should be constructed to show design skills, drawing skills, and media exploration.
Personal interview with a member of the Art Faculty.
Conditions for Award Renewal:

Continue to major in Studio Art, Graphic Design or Art Education.
Maintain a strong academic standing including a 2.5 GPA or higher with satisfactory work in the major.
Maintain a full-time academic course load.
Successfully complete the annual portfolio review process.
Receive a recommendation from the Division Chair.
Application Deadline:
March 1 – Applications received after this date will be held for consideration depending on scholarship availability.

Theatre Performance Award Criteria:

Basis for Award:

Intended major in Theatre
Academic achievement, demonstrated by a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Exhibit a talent in acting or technical theatre.
Full-time enrollment is required.
Awards ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, talent and potential.

Term of the Award:
One academic year (see renewal requirements below).

Application Procedures:

Apply for admission and be accepted for enrollment to William Woods University.
Complete and submit at William Woods University Scholarship and Awards Application.
Audition/interview with the Artistic Director of Theatre
Submit a head shot or recent photograph
Specific Audition Criteria for Areas of Interest within Theatre Major:

Performance

Perform two contrasting monologues i.e. a comedy, drama, or a classical piece. The monologues need not be more than 2-5 minutes in length.
Bring a resume of performance and technical experience
Bring a portfolio containing reviews, production shots, modeling shots, and any other important examples of work.
Bring at least two letters of recommendation from individuals other than family. Examples would be a drama teacher, any teacher, counselor or minister
Musical Theatre

Perform two contrasting monologues i.e. a comedy, drama, or a classical piece. The monologues need not be more than 2-5 minutes in length.
Sing two contrasting musical selections i.e. a ballad and an up-tempo piece. Each selection should be no more than 16 bars in length. (Please bring a musical accompaniment tape.)
Bring a resume of performance and technical experience
Bring a portfolio containing reviews, production shots, modeling shots, and any other important examples of work.
Bring at least two letters of recommendation from individuals other than family. Examples would be a drama teacher, any teacher, counselor or minister
Technical

An interview with the faculty
Submit a portfolio for review in the interview. The portfolio should include examples of work. Examples would include designs, photos, drawings, renderings, slides, prompt scripts.
Bring a resume of performance and technical experience
Bring a portfolio containing reviews, production shots, modeling shots, and any other important examples of work.
Bring at least two letters of recommendation from individuals other than family. Examples would be a drama teacher, any teacher, counselor or minister
Conditions for Award Renewal:

Continue to major in Theatre.
Maintain a strong academic standing including a 2.5 GPA with satisfactory work in the major..
Maintain a full-time academic course load.
Audition for every mainstage production, or work on the crew of every mainstage production. If you are not cast as an actor, you will automatically be placed on a crew. If you are not cast as an actor, you will automatically be placed on a crew.
Attend all department functions, meetings, crew calls, forced calls, workdays, load-ins and strikes.
Hold a specific Theatre Department position maintaining weekly hours in one of the following areas: management, performance, or theatre technology.
Successfully complete the annual portfolio review process.
Receive a recommendation from the Chair of the Division of Arts and Sciences.

Communications Award Criteria:

Scholarship Award Criteria:
1. The candidate must gain admission to the University through the William Woods University Enrollment Council.
2. The candidate must make application for the William Woods Performance Award.
3. The candidate must present a 300 word essay answering the following questions:
• What impact does ________ have on society.
• Please fill in the blank with your specific area of interest; for example: journalism, public relations, speech, radio / television broadcasting, film production, etc.
4. In addition, a candidate may present a portfolio showing any work they have compiled to date. This is not a requirement for consideration, but students who have had high school experience may wish to submit newspaper or yearbook clippings, a short film they have produced, a recorded presentation they have given, etc.
5. The candidate must enter William Woods as a declared major in communication arts.

Award Value:
• Renewable awards, ranging from $500 - $3,000 are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, talent, and potential.

Limited renewable awards, up to $5,000, are available. Students with strong potential to become academic and creative role models within the division will be considered.
Award value is based on discernable potential.

Upon receiving a communication scholarship the student must:
• Continue to major in communication.
• Maintain strong academic standing.
• Maintain a full-time academic course load.
• Continue to show positive contributions to the Communication department.

These awards are renewable for four (4) years based on performance and continuance in the major.
