 2007 Faculty Award Winner

Carrie McCray

Carrie McCray, an alumna of William Woods University, is now an instructor of American Sign Language interpreting at her alma mater. This year, she was the recipient the Louis D. Beaumont Dad’s Association Distinguished Professor Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The award carries an honorarium and is given annually to a faculty member who has displayed dedication to teaching. McCray, a Fulton resident, has taught at the university for two years.

Before that, she had been the staff interpreter and coordinator of the Office of Disability Services on campus for eight years. She also was an adjunct faculty member for two years.

Not only did McCray earn a B.S. in psychology and ASL interpreting from WWU in 1997, she received her master of education in curriculum and instruction here in 2004, as well. She is pursuing her doctorate in educational leadership and policy analysis at the University of Missouri.

She is certified by the MICS (Missouri Interpreter Certification System) at the Comprehensive level (2001) and licensed by the State of Missouri at the Comprehensive Level.

Her areas of expertise are mental health interpreting, educational interpreting, ethics of interpreters, interpreting in theatrical settings and the business aspects of freelance interpreting.

McCray has been a board member of the State Committee of Interpreters since 2000 and a member of the CIT Conference of Interpreter Trainers since 2005. She was a board member of Midwest L.E.A.D. Institute, 2003-2006, and a member of AHEAD (Association of Higher Education and Disability) in 2004.

She is active in Ham’s Prairie Christian Church and chaired vacation bible school in 2005 and 2006. She also volunteers at Fulton Preschool, teaching sign language.

McCray and her husband, Chuck, have two daughters, Rylee Paige, 5, and Ellie Addison, 4. Her parents are Joe and Carolyn Houk of Fairview, Okla.
